Dan Martin sealed his second place overall in the Tour of Beijing today, ending the five day race just three seconds behind the winner Philippe Gilbert (BMC) and showing again that he has hit a form peak towards the end of the season. Martin’s run of form makes up for what was an at-times frustrating season. He crashed on the final bend of Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April, losing his chance of taking a second straight victory, and also fell on the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, sustaining a fractured collarbone. He missed the Tour de France but bounced back to take second on a stage and seventh overall in the Vuelta a Espana. Bad luck struck him again in the world road race championships when he was caught up in a crash and delayed, losing his chance. However since then things have gone better for him; he put in a superbly-timed attack to win the Il Lombardia Classic earlier this month, then took that stage win plus second overall in the Tour of Beijing. As a former winner of the Japan Cup, Dan will be one of the top favourites for that season-ending event. Photo credits: Graham Watson

Defending champion Marianne Vos missed out on medals as France’s Pauline Ferrand Prevot won gold in the women’s road race ahead of Lisa Brennauer (Germany) and Emma Johansson (Sweden) in second and third, and Giorgia Bronzini (Italy) in a narrow fourth. Towards the top of the final ascent of Mirador, Armitstead went clear with Vos, Johansson and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy. “The attack of the group of four with Vos, Armitstead, Johansson and Borghini made a big mess.” The quartet maintained their advantage on the 2km descent into Ponferrada but began looking at each other, rather than working together in the final kilometer. That allowed a group containing 22-year-old Ferrand Prevot to catch them 500m from the finish. Vos led the sprint into the final 200m but Ferrand Prevot, Brennauer, Johannson and Bronzini all raced by. The attack of the group of four with Vos, Armitstead, Johansson and Borghini made a big mess.” said Giorgia Bronzini  to Castelli after the race. “When we caught them with 500m to go, I found myself boxed in and didn’t really have the punch to overtake Lisa or Emma when I finally found my line next to the barrier. ”

Alex Zanardi and Vittorio Podestà came to the Castelli stand at the Expobici, the biggest bike show of Italy, in Padua. They came to make a small conference in front of the people that came to the stand and to sign some autograph, finishing the postcards they had in few minutes. Zanardi had to talk about Kona, because he will participate to the World IronMan championship. Everybody knows about the curiosity and the tenacity of Alex, he always wants to try new things in sport and this will be his ultimate adventure…for now. When he told to his coach Francesco Chiappero that he wanted to do it, he could not believe it; but when he saw Alex on Gavia and Pordoi, he told him he could do it. Zanardi admits to be very lucky. He always say that he can do what he does because he has the possibility and doing a Ironman is an opportunity that many good athletes dream for all their life, and he can take part to this challange. He says that many other people could make the same results of him or more having the opportunity he has, and he is lucky because he has ...

Dylan van Baarle (Garmin-Sharp) won the Tour of Britain, holding firm to his overall lead during Sunday’s double-stage day in London. Van Baarle triumphed over Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Bradley Wiggins (Sky) finished third. Olympic champion Wiggins, the first British rider to win the Tour de France in 2013, won the morning’s individual time trial. But as he suspected, Wiggins left himself with too much to do in terms of defending his title. Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano) won the afternoon circuit race, taking a bunch sprint ahead of Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma). Photos by Jered Gruber and Slipstreamsports .
