Some of the best triathletes came together last weekend at the newly established Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau (formerly known as Challenge Kraichgau) in the South West of Germany. Castelli athlete Fraser Cartmell placed 6th in a strong field that also doubled as the German Championships and was won by reigning Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle ahead of Ironman 70.3 St. Pölten dominator Andi Böcherer. Unusually for so early in the summer the race was held as a non-wetsuit swim due to the exceptionally hot weather in the week previous warming the lake temperature above the 22 °C. This suited Fraser’s swim strength fairly well and he exited the water in the top 5 right behind the leaders. Early in the bike Kienle and Andreas Böcherer pulled away through the rolling countryside and established a huge lead on the remainder of the field into T2. Fraser was part of a chase group of around 7 athletes that followed.
