The pros have taken to Zwift like never before. While their day jobs may be on hold temporarily, they can ill afford to rest up in quarantine like many of us. With cycling fitness, it’s a question of use it or lose it. And in the current climate, Zwift and other online platforms provide the only means by which many can train effectively. If you’ve been waiting for your opportunity to test your legs against the pros, then you’ve never had a better chance. The cycling season never quite got started, so you may even stand a chance! Many of our favorite pro riders past and present are on Zwift. And with little in the way of racing or outdoor riding available, it’s hard to keep them off the platform. Keep an eye on their twitter accounts for when they’ll be riding. You can also ride with professional road athletes or triathletes every Tuesday at 19:25 (CET) and ‘Ride It Out with Castelli’. The rides are social in nature, on rolling courses, with the aim of getting riders together, supporting each other and having a chat along the way.  Many will find it hard to stick to the pace of the ...

Dan Martin sealed his second place overall in the Tour of Beijing today, ending the five day race just three seconds behind the winner Philippe Gilbert (BMC) and showing again that he has hit a form peak towards the end of the season. Martin’s run of form makes up for what was an at-times frustrating season. He crashed on the final bend of Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April, losing his chance of taking a second straight victory, and also fell on the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, sustaining a fractured collarbone. He missed the Tour de France but bounced back to take second on a stage and seventh overall in the Vuelta a Espana. Bad luck struck him again in the world road race championships when he was caught up in a crash and delayed, losing his chance. However since then things have gone better for him; he put in a superbly-timed attack to win the Il Lombardia Classic earlier this month, then took that stage win plus second overall in the Tour of Beijing. As a former winner of the Japan Cup, Dan will be one of the top favourites for that season-ending event. Photo credits: Graham Watson

“This? This is Classics weather,” says Todd Herriot as he ponders his choice of gloves and leg warmers in the parking lot at Log Boom Park. Those words turned out to be quite foreboding of the two hours that followed. With spring just around the corner and the start of the road racing season in the PNW only a week away, this Saturday morning featured the season’s (or off-season’s) last Rocket Ride. The ride brings together some of the fastest riders in the area on an almost 50-mile trek of rural roads and hills. It is a tough ride on a good day. This was not a good day. Temperatures were pegged firmly in the upper-30 territory and the light drizzle turned to cold rain at 9 o’clock as if on schedule. The conditions continued to deteriorate until rain turned to sleet turned to snow. Major kudos to all of the riders and the finishers. A big thanks to Jim for driving the “photo car”, not getting us lost and always placing me in a good spot. Thanks to: Andy Bokanev
