The one-day race so many pro riders have been preparing for is finally upon us: the 2017 UCI Road World Championships elite men’s road race. The wild coastal landscape of western Norway will mark the start of the men’s race. The wobbly 267.5 km course should make for an unpredictable contest, compounded by the potential for tricky weather, or what some riders would call “Perfetto, Gabba” conditions. The field will have plenty of big names hoping to take the rainbow jersey on Sunday. The Castelli-equipped Italian national road team, with the Italian ‘commissario tecnico’, Davide Cassani, arrived in Bergen on Thursday to check out the course and stretch their legs before the fireworks begin on Sunday. Italy has a strong lineup for Sunday (see full list below). Elia Viviani and Matteo Trentin are two strong contenders for an Italian world championships success. Viviani was second at the European road race, which came down to a reduced bunch sprint, and his Italian teammate Trentin is also on form after bagging five wins in the last month (four stages at La Vuelta a España and the Primus Classic). With the possibility of a late escape also coming into play, Gianni Moscon, Sonny Colbrelli and ...

The heat blanketing the Middle East is affecting the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha. Riders have complained of extreme conditions and have exhibited signs of heat exhaustion, with several individuals requiring medical assistance. To give the Italian National Road Cycling Team an innovative edge, the Castelli Speed Research Unit and Politecnico di Milano have developed a jersey with titanium dioxide sun protection and cooling panels to help the riders beat the heat. Beating the heat, or rather minimizing its negative effects on performance. It’s not just the temperature that matters, but also the humidity and airflow. And what does it mean to race in these conditions? When the body temperature rises above 39 degrees (to the heat generated by muscular effort is added that from the sun’s radiation), oxygen transfer from hemoglobin to body tissues is impaired, with a corresponding decline in performance. A 2 percent reduction in weight due to dehydration reduces performance by 8 to 10 percent. Heat dissipation takes place largely through the evaporation of sweat. However, excessive sweating leads to the most dangerous enemy, dehydration, because there is a limit to how much fluid an individual can replenish. A 2 percent reduction in weight ...

The season of cold, rain and shortened days has come. This might make some people want to curl up in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate, but if you’re reading this blog there’s a good chance you’re not that kind of person. There are still nearly 10 hours of light per day to enjoy, and autumn is the best season to appreciate beautiful colors and landscapes, so it seems like a good opportunity to switch out the road bike for the mountain bike and hit the trails. Castelli is celebrating the transition from the road season to the MTB/cyclocross season with a series of videos made with Massimo Debertolis, a mountain biker from the Primiero valley, just 30 kilometers from the Castelli headquarters. Massimo was Italian MTB champion in 2004 and 2007 and world marathon champion in 2004. He is now building a team, which will wear Castelli for the 2015 season. Enjoy these videos, and stay tuned to discover the rest of Massimo’s story on blog.castelli-cycling.com, November 26, 2014. Defending champion Marianne Vos missed out on medals as France’s Pauline Ferrand Prevot won gold in the women’s road race ahead of Lisa Brennauer (Germany) and Emma Johansson (Sweden) in second and third, and Giorgia Bronzini (Italy) in a narrow fourth. Towards the top of the final ascent of Mirador, Armitstead went clear with Vos, Johansson and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy. “The attack of the group of four with Vos, Armitstead, Johansson and Borghini made a big mess.” The quartet maintained their advantage on the 2km descent into Ponferrada but began looking at each other, rather than working together in the final kilometer. That allowed a group containing 22-year-old Ferrand Prevot to catch them 500m from the finish. Vos led the sprint into the final 200m but Ferrand Prevot, Brennauer, Johannson and Bronzini all raced by. The attack of the group of four with Vos, Armitstead, Johansson and Borghini made a big mess.” said Giorgia Bronzini  to Castelli after the race. “When we caught them with 500m to go, I found myself boxed in and didn’t really have the punch to overtake Lisa or Emma when I finally found my line next to the barrier. ”

February saw the inaugural edition of the Dubai Tour. A four stage UCI race, all kicking off each day from the World Trade Centre. From here you could catch the peloton sign on, the roll out and get your daily dose of traditional food and geek out on the latest bike bits, not a bad start to the day I’m sure you’d agree. Castelli were proud to be the official partners and supply the leaders jerseys, each stage saw the leaders of all four classifications kitted out in the latest Castelli jersey. With Versace design and Castelli’s technical input the jerseys looked good on all of the leaders shoulders. If you kept abreast of the sport during the race you’d know that the whole event was incredibly well received, not just by the pros competing but by the flurry of media attending, team staff and local fans. The race was strongly contested by many of the big names. There was no turning up and using it as training for later races, it was serious business for all the riders involved. Taylor Phinney took the overall lead, Marcel Kittel stormed to 3 stage wins and a sprinters jersey plus Garmin-Sharp’s Lasse ...
