The Facts Girona is one of the major cities of Catalonia, situated 100km north east of Barcelona with a population of approx 100,000. It’s origins go back over 2000yrs to when the Romans ruled, over the next thousand years it changed hands from the Romans to the Visigoths to the Moors before eventually finding itself under long term Spanish rule. The Romans built a citadel, the Moors a mosque, while the Spanish built the cathedral we know today, all built on top of each other on the prominent position we are now so familiar with. During the 12th century the Jewish community flourished in Girona, having one of the most important Kabbalistic schools in Europe until the Alhambra Decree of 1492 forced the Jewish people to convert to Catholicism or face expulsion from Spain.
