Egan Bernal, geraint thomas, le tour, tdf, Team INEOS, Team Sky, tour de france, Yellow jersey -

When Egan Bernal signed for Team Sky two years ago all experts agreed that the only 22-year-old Colombian is a rough diamond with a promising future ahead. Before the season Egan wasn’t even supposed to ride the Tour. He should have been the dedicated captain for the Giro d’Italia in May. But it was to be different. His crash including a broken collarbone and another setback for the team – Chris Froome’s fatal crash – ultimately led to Team INEOS’ dual leadership for the Tour. It’s pointless to speculate how this fact influenced the progress of the race this year but opened some new possibility and tactical options, especially for the three decisive mountain stages in the final week. Three stages where Egan Bernal proved that he clearly was the strongest climber this year and laid the foundation to take the yellow jersey. Lean back and enjoy some highlights of the past three weeks captured by Team INEOS, Ashley & Jered Gruber and Getty Images.

Since 2007, Team MTN-Qhubeka have focused on becoming the first African team at the Le Tour de France, and that dream was realised this year when the team received a wildcard invitation to the Grande Boucle. “For us and across South Africa and Africa, when people talk about cycling, they talk about the Tour de France,” says Douglas Ryder, MTN-Qhubeka’s team principal. “It’s as if there is no other race. They don’t understand that as a team we race 200 race days to prepare and get ready and get strong enough to be able to compete in a Grand Tour like the Tour de France.” The team are hoping that participation and success in the world’s biggest bicycle race will aspire more interest in the sport among Africans, eventually producing more homegrown talent. “Having a team like ours, with a uniquely different story and riders from all over the African continent, we know that it will just raise the profile and it will kick the door open for African cyclists into the future,” Ryder says.
