MTN-Qhubeka to race Amgen Tour of California

MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung announced today that they have received an invitation to compete for the first time at this year’s Amgen Tour of California. The Amgen Tour of California is America’s premier cycling race and takes place from 10-17 May. The team has been invited to a series of top-level races. They received their first Grand Tour invitation to the Vuelta a España last year and recently received a wildcard invitation to compete at the Tour de France in July, making them the first African-registered team to compete at the French Grand Tour. The team have bolstered their roster this year with a series of new signings including Matthew Goss from Orica-GreenEdge, Tyler Farrar from Garmin-Sharp, Theo Boss from Belkin, Edvald Boasson Hagen from Team Sky and Steven Cummings from the BMC squad. American sprinter Farrar won stage 4 of the Tour of California during the 2013 edition. Dan Martin – An Irishman in California.

Before May 2011 Garmin-Cervélo rider Dan Martin had never been to California. His introduction to the state at this year’s Amgen Tour of California gave him a vivid view of the Golden State’s varied terrain and weather. From a 30-degree Tahoe blizzard to raking Central Valley winds to 75-degree Southern California sunshine, the 24-year old Irishman saw California in all its scenic moods.

After Martin had a chance to shower off all the champagne from the squad’s wild team podium celebration in Thousand Oaks, Garmin-Cervélo’s team photographer Mark Johnson caught up with him to collect his thoughts on his first-ever US race, where he placed a very respectable 14th overall.

Dress like a pro

When it comes to iconic cycling locations in the US, not many can compare to the awe-inspiring spectacle of the California coast. That being said, it was difficult to refuse an invitation from the Kovarus / ABTA cycling team to have us along for a photo/video shoot on some of their favorite training roads.
