As a previous host of the 2013 Cyclocross World Championships, Louisville, Kentucky was familiar with dramatic events. Heavy snowmelt and a river rising onto the race course being one of them. This year, the weather delivered in a more predictable way. Rain came down and riders churned the wet hillsides into muddy trenches, the way it’s supposed to happen. At least in the world of cyclocross. But the event also delivered some of the most incredible race stories and rider performances that could be hoped for. Castelli teams and athletes, from juniors to the elites, all raced with grit, carrying mud-thickened bikes like crosses, and often finished with smiles and looks of disbelief. Here’s a look back on the mud and gray skies, on emotional performances, and on seemingly unthinkable victories.

One of the toughest one-day races in the calendar has already been casting its shadow earlier this week and teams were busy with reconnaissance and fine-tuning their equipment for Sunday. It looks like another dry edition. The last muddy edition of Paris-Roubaix was way back in 2002 by the way. The following gallery is a retrospective of the recent history (Castelli coloured) and should fuel the fire and excitement for RBX. Images by Tim De Waele, Ashley and Jered Gruber

PERFETTO LIGHT SHORT SLEEVE JERSEY: PRO-REQUESTED PERFECTION There’s no denying that the Gabba short-sleeve jersey has been a game changer in pro cycling. Most of the peloton pulls it out whenever the weather is cold or wet. But sometimes the Gabba is too much. The Gabba’s allover protection can make it feel too warm for racing in merely cool conditions, so some of the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team riders asked for protection like the Gabba but with more breathability for milder temperatures. Enter the versatile Perfetto Light. It’s a lightweight, more breathable option with the same weather-resistant qualities and aerodynamic fit that helped the Gabba conquer the cycling world. It has the same cut as the Gabba and combines a lightweight windproof and water-resistant Windstopper® 150 material on the front, shoulders and sleeves (25% lighter than the fabric used on the Gabba) with a water-resistant Nano Light Pro on the back (an unbrushed version of the Nano Flex fabric, which is highly water repellent and stretchy but has no membrane to inhibit air exchange). The fabric is very tightly knit so you don’t feel the wind coming through, but it is open enough to prevent the moisture buildup that you can experience with ...

The creation of the Free Bibshort was one of our greatest and most enjoyable challenges in recent years. How could we improve on a bibshort that was already considered the best by many cyclists, both professional and amateur? We deliberately did not totally revolutionize the entire structure of the traditional Free, which has made its way all over the world since 2007, but we have improved every single essential element in an effort to approach perfection. This process took two years of studies and field tests with our athletes. Riders from Cannondale Pro Cycling Team used it for a full season in their races and training, testing it in all weather conditions and over thousands of kilometers. Considering that a pro cyclist rides an average of about 30,000 km per year, this helps us confirm the durability of each individual material used in the Free Bibshort as well as ensuring a perfect fit for all the hours spent on the bike.       It’s probably the best short I’ve ever used. It’s great to have confidence in your equipment like that as well. After six hours in the saddle you’re still going to be in fighting shape for the ...
