For this year’s Dubai Tour Mark Cavendish (the 2015 winner) will be in an illustrious circle of champions that includes Sir Bradley Wiggins, Philippe Gilbert, Rui Costa, Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin and a band of sprinters including Elia Viviani and Andrea Guardini and Marcel Kittel. DUBAI TOUR 2016 STAGES The Dubai Tour is made up from three stages suited to the sprinters and one – stage three, The Westin Stage – to the puncheurs. The only fact that might split the race during the opening two stages are crosswinds that could come into play on the more open roads across the desert. Stage three repeats the uphill finish to Hatta Dam that was won by John Degenkolb last year. The German will miss the race but the short and steep climb (200 m) is ideally suited for riders like Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar) or Philippe Gilbert (BMC). The final stage without any climbing will probably be decided in a bunch sprint and should fix – together with bonus points – the order of the final classification. Stage one, February 3, Dubai International Marine Club to Fujairah, 179km Stage two, February 4, Dubai International Marine Club to Palm Jumeirah, 188km Stage three, February 5, ...

February saw the inaugural edition of the Dubai Tour. A four stage UCI race, all kicking off each day from the World Trade Centre. From here you could catch the peloton sign on, the roll out and get your daily dose of traditional food and geek out on the latest bike bits, not a bad start to the day I’m sure you’d agree. Castelli were proud to be the official partners and supply the leaders jerseys, each stage saw the leaders of all four classifications kitted out in the latest Castelli jersey. With Versace design and Castelli’s technical input the jerseys looked good on all of the leaders shoulders. If you kept abreast of the sport during the race you’d know that the whole event was incredibly well received, not just by the pros competing but by the flurry of media attending, team staff and local fans. The race was strongly contested by many of the big names. There was no turning up and using it as training for later races, it was serious business for all the riders involved. Taylor Phinney took the overall lead, Marcel Kittel stormed to 3 stage wins and a sprinters jersey plus Garmin-Sharp’s Lasse ...

Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) won the inaugural edition of the Dubai Tour on Saturday after successfully defending the race lead from his opening time trial stage win. Phinney’s teammate Steven Cummings came into second place, 15 seconds behind, while the Danish Olympic Champion (Omnium) on Team Garmin Sharp, Lasse Norman Hansen, was third 17 seconds behind. RCS Sport, which also organizes the Giro d’Italia, did a fantastic job this year to help organize and develop the Dubai Tour. RCS Sport has signed a three-year agreement with the Dubai Sports Council and are considering taking the course into the expansive desert country beyond Dubai’s spectacular urban landscape. “When we received the proposal for the Dubai Tour, we said, ‘Why not?’ After all, Dubai hosts many world-class events, and cycling is a prestigious addition to the list,” Saeed Hareb, chairman of the organizing committee, said. “We are all happy with what we saw. It brought people out onto the streets. We hope to grow the event next year.” Everybody seemed to like what they saw in the first edition of the Dubai Tour, especially local sheiks underwriting the four-day race.
