Story by Andy McGrath | rouleur.cc We visit the Castelli factory in late November – well, it’d be remiss to gab about the Gabba at the height of summer. If you’re wondering how a rainwear revolution could happen in sunny Italy, abandon all weather stereotypes ye who enter their home town, Fonzaso. The Dolomites rear up and the temperature drops as we drive through the north-eastern Italian countryside, past wood stacks and through early morning mist. Apparently, this place gets twice as much rain as London. We meet Castelli brand manager Steve Smith and Race Performance Director, Andrea Peron, who takes us for a morning espresso (well, this is Italy). We stroll down the main artery, which is dominated by a big glass window, looking out over a floor of 40 sewing machines and their attendant stitchers, busy working on samples for the summer 2016 line. Notice a common denominator? They’re all from cruddy-weather countries. “We spent the first 45 minutes talking about traditional rain jackets, incremental improvements on the Pocket Liner,” Smith says. “We’d actually already made a first-round sample of it. Gabriel Rasch disappeared up to his room and came back down, talking about fit… Gabriel is quiet, ...

road.cc just unveiled the People’s Choice survey of favorite winter cycling jackets, and the results are in, the ‪#‎GABBA‬ 2 adds another first place to its Palmarés. 1st equal: Gabba 2 Castelli’s Gabba water-resistant jersey/jacket was such a hit among pro riders that those not sponsored by Castelli bought their own and blacked out the logos. Unsurprising, then, that it’s one of the two most popular winter jackets among UK riders too. The Gabba is made from Gore X-lite plus, a lightweight windproof fabric with water-repellent properties. It’s designed by and for pros, so the fit is tight and racy. It has a storm-flap at the rear to protect the rider from wheel spray. The biggest difference, and improvement, on teh Gabba 2 is the introduction of a wind flap for the full-length zip, keeping more wind and rain out than the previous version. Castelli’s Gabba waterproof jersey needs little introduction. Since it came out in 2010, it has taken the pro peloton, and non-fairweather cyclists by storm. And that’s fair enough really, who wouldn’t want to make their bad weather riding a bit more comfortable? A quick recap: The Gabba is made from Gore X-lite plus, a lightweight windproof fabric with water-repellent properties. It’s designed by and for pros, so the fit is tight and racy. It has a storm-flap at the rear to protect the rider from wheel spray. We’re on the new and improved version now, imaginatively called Gabba 2. The biggest difference, and improvement, is the introduction of a wind flap for the full-length zip, keeping more wind and rain out than the previous version. The eyelets in the rear pockets have been replaced with mesh fabric at the bottom of the pockets for better drainage. Other features have remained the same: the aero fit, reflective piping on the three pockets, full-length zip, high collar and gripper hem. I guess by now it’ll be clear that pros like this one for racing in foul conditions, but where does it fit in for those not racing? I like wearing it in ...

Castelli are renowned for making garments that stand the test of time. But one item they produce has been more than just a game changer. It’s caused rival manufactures to sit up and try to keep up, it’s changed what many riders now expect from cycle clothing, it’s caused a tremor in the cycle clothing world that will surely be felt for a long time to come. You probably guessed what said item is, the now renowned Gabba. You know you’ve produced something special when it has an impact on the culture it was intended for, this may be the mainstream culture, a sub culture or in this case cycling culture. History has several examples of clothing making an impact on the culture of its time, changing and in some cases challenging how people think a product should look or perform. Mary Quant can lay claim to being the brains behind the mini skirt, it shook mainstream culture in a way that very few clothes had or have since. It was a rebellious item and still is, even 4 decades on. It screams what youth culture was at all about in the 60’s. Tennis culture had Stan Smith and Adidas, ...
