“Not every one of you will become a Grand Tour guy.” Mike Sayers wasted little time before deflating some of the air out of the room filled with testosterone and aspirations emblematic of his audience of bike racers ranging in age from 16 to 23. For many riders present in the room, hearing these words from Sayers — the U23 Program Director at USA Cycling — was a first reality check of many as they began their transition from amateur bicycle racing to the professional peloton. This was their first day on the job at the Hagens Berman U23 Cycling Team. The real work started a few months later under the warm spring sun of Southern California when team principals Todd Herriott and David Richter pulled the team together for training camp. Between the hundreds of miles ridden in the Santa Monica mountains that week to the first race of the season at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, all the way to the the wet and blustery conditions in the season-closing race at the Bucks County Classic in Doylestown, PA the year was filled with its share of highs. There was Adrien Costa’s overall win at the 1/2 race at Tour of the ...

The Gabba might have grabbed the headlines over the past few years, but Castelli have an impressive range of other jackets to cater for every meteorological scenario. The Castelli Free jacket is designed  to keep the cold out on dry, winter days, and does a good job with a garment that is close-fitting in all the right areas to keep the wind at bay. The Castelli Free jacket is an impressive piece of kit that will keep you warm on all but the coldest of days. At MSRP €189,95 (£175) the Castelli Free jacket sits bang in the middle of the Italian brand’s range of windproof jackets and is designed for temperatures of between zero and 10ºC. In reality though,  you can extend this range depending on what other pieces of clothing you choose to pair it with. The main body of the jacket is made from Gore Windstopper X-Fast 2 fabric, which, as the name suggests, does an excellent job of stopping the wind. What’s more the inside is light fleece material, meaning that we were comfortable riding in temperatures up to 15ºC with only a base layer underneath. IM 70.3, ironman, Ironman 70.3, Miami, Michael Raelert, Raelert Brothers, Triathlon -

Michael Raelert has shown a strong performance at the City Bikes Ironman 70.3 Miami. The 34-year old celebrated a great victory in 3:46:47 which meant an important step on his way back to the top. „I’m really satisfied with my performance today,“ said the Rostockian after the race, „especially, I‘m happy that I have been able to improve on the run.“ Michael Raelert opened up a decisive gap and took the win ahead of Australian Richie Cunningham (3:47:16) and Ukrainian Viktor Zyemtsev (3:48:11). Michael Raelert was one of the dominating athletes right from the start of the race. US-American David Kahn exited the water in first place after 1.9 kilometers in 25:04 minutes just a few seconds ahead of Michael Raelert (25:33). The Rostockian led a group of eight into T1 including co-favorites like Richie Cunningham (AUS), Matt Reed (USA) or Fabio Carvalho from Brazil. “It was a pretty good start into the race,” said Michael Raelert. When he took the victory at Ironman 70.3 Ruegen a few weeks ago, the swim had to be cancelled due to stormy winds – in Miami Michael Raelert eventually was able to show his swimming strength. After a fast transition in 89 seconds, ...

Before this season, German Castelli triathlete Matthias Knossalla decided to buy a WTC pro license to play with the big boys. Due to injury, he had a bumpy start into the season but in the end he can look back on a season which exceeded all expectations. Matthias is recharging his batteries now and reviews his first pro season for us. It is a long time since you read my last “athletes diary”. My past few months have been very exciting. After a shoulder surgery in April, it was a tough and sometimes difficult road back to full health. Even though I had success in duathlons early in the season, swimming was a different story. I knew, that it will take me some time to get my shoulder to full strength again, so I couldn’t rush anything in the pool at the beginning. For nearly four months I was only able to do gentle drills. During that time I questioned my plans and upcoming races, because I wasn’t sure if I’m ready for my first triathlon season as a professional. Should I cancel everything and try it at full strength next year? The answer was NO. So I decided to give it a try ...
