The one-day race so many pro riders have been preparing for is finally upon us: the 2017 UCI Road World Championships elite men’s road race. The wild coastal landscape of western Norway will mark the start of the men’s race. The wobbly 267.5 km course should make for an unpredictable contest, compounded by the potential for tricky weather, or what some riders would call “Perfetto, Gabba” conditions. The field will have plenty of big names hoping to take the rainbow jersey on Sunday. The Castelli-equipped Italian national road team, with the Italian ‘commissario tecnico’, Davide Cassani, arrived in Bergen on Thursday to check out the course and stretch their legs before the fireworks begin on Sunday. Italy has a strong lineup for Sunday (see full list below). Elia Viviani and Matteo Trentin are two strong contenders for an Italian world championships success. Viviani was second at the European road race, which came down to a reduced bunch sprint, and his Italian teammate Trentin is also on form after bagging five wins in the last month (four stages at La Vuelta a España and the Primus Classic). With the possibility of a late escape also coming into play, Gianni Moscon, Sonny Colbrelli and ...

The heat blanketing the Middle East is affecting the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha. Riders have complained of extreme conditions and have exhibited signs of heat exhaustion, with several individuals requiring medical assistance. To give the Italian National Road Cycling Team an innovative edge, the Castelli Speed Research Unit and Politecnico di Milano have developed a jersey with titanium dioxide sun protection and cooling panels to help the riders beat the heat. Beating the heat, or rather minimizing its negative effects on performance. It’s not just the temperature that matters, but also the humidity and airflow. And what does it mean to race in these conditions? When the body temperature rises above 39 degrees (to the heat generated by muscular effort is added that from the sun’s radiation), oxygen transfer from hemoglobin to body tissues is impaired, with a corresponding decline in performance. A 2 percent reduction in weight due to dehydration reduces performance by 8 to 10 percent. Heat dissipation takes place largely through the evaporation of sweat. However, excessive sweating leads to the most dangerous enemy, dehydration, because there is a limit to how much fluid an individual can replenish. A 2 percent reduction in weight ...

When did your passion for cycling start? It was in 1967, when I was 15 years old. My passion began during summer vacation, when I watched the Giro d’Italia on television and got excited about the participants’ athletic exploits. Why sales? When and how did you start? I was a cyclist, and my career enabled me to wear the national jersey in the Peace Race. When I retired from racing, I saw an advertisement in a newspaper and sent my résumé to Rosate, near Milan, where after a few days I had a meeting with Maurizio Castelli, who was looking for an agent for Emilia-Romagna. Maurizio chose me, and my working relationship with Castelli has continued since that October day in 1981. What is your approach to planning a new sales campaign? What are the key points to consider when you start a new campaign? I must say that even today, when a sales campaign starts I’m excited and motivated, because this responsibility is very stimulating and rewarding professionally; I give and receive at the same time. I try to plan everything, focusing on the most important points, starting from my top clients or at least those that can make ...

Original article by Nicola Busca | cyclingweekly.co.uk Team Sky rider and Castelli have developed specific skinsuits for each of the Omnium disciplines. Italian manufacturer Castelli has developed together with Team Sky rider Elia Viviani a customised skinsuit the Italian cyclist will wear at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as he attempts to win Omnium gold. Viviani has worked in the wind tunnel of the Polytechnic University of Milan and tried 15 different suits and fabrics to find the best fit for the Olympics. “We tested 15 different textiles and cuts to find the one that suits him the best.” (Steve Smith, Castelli brand manager) “The models developed for Viviani has been developed from what we have been studied and developed in a long time”, says Steve Smith, Castelli brand manager. “We tested 15 different textiles and cuts to find the one that suits him the best, both for the individual and group races as the fabrics don’t perform in the same way with different speeds.” Viviani will compete in the Omnium, which features six different track racing disciplines, meaning that Castelli has developed multiple skinsuits, with each designed for a specific event. In the wind tunnel the 27-year-old tested the skinsuits ...
