The heat blanketing the Middle East is affecting the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha. Riders have complained of extreme conditions and have exhibited signs of heat exhaustion, with several individuals requiring medical assistance. To give the Italian National Road Cycling Team an innovative edge, the Castelli Speed Research Unit and Politecnico di Milano have developed a jersey with titanium dioxide sun protection and cooling panels to help the riders beat the heat. Beating the heat, or rather minimizing its negative effects on performance. It’s not just the temperature that matters, but also the humidity and airflow. And what does it mean to race in these conditions? When the body temperature rises above 39 degrees (to the heat generated by muscular effort is added that from the sun’s radiation), oxygen transfer from hemoglobin to body tissues is impaired, with a corresponding decline in performance. A 2 percent reduction in weight due to dehydration reduces performance by 8 to 10 percent. Heat dissipation takes place largely through the evaporation of sweat. The season of cold, rain and shortened days has come. This might make some people want to curl up in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate, but if you’re reading this blog there’s a good chance you’re not that kind of person. There are still nearly 10 hours of light per day to enjoy, and autumn is the best season to appreciate beautiful colors and landscapes, so it seems like a good opportunity to switch out the road bike for the mountain bike and hit the trails. Castelli is celebrating the transition from the road season to the MTB/cyclocross season with a series of videos made with Massimo Debertolis, a mountain biker from the Primiero valley, just 30 kilometers from the Castelli headquarters. Massimo was Italian MTB champion in 2004 and 2007 and world marathon champion in 2004. He is now building a team, which will wear Castelli for the 2015 season. Enjoy these videos, and stay tuned to discover the rest of Massimo’s story on blog.castelli-cycling.com, November 26, 2014. Defending Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae had planned to somehow produce something even better than last year’s masterpiece. Mirinda Carfrae’s third Ironman World Championship victory on Saturday in Kona, Hawaii, didn’t look like a possibility at the T2 (transition from bike to run), Carfrae exited with more than 14 minutes behind then race leader Daniela Ryf. Carfrae broke her own run course record, set last year, when she moved past Ryf in the marathon and giving her the third Ironman world title of her career. Two years after launching its line of innovative triathlon apparel, Castelli was again worn to victory at the pinnacle event of the sport. Carfrae wore the scorpion to a stunning victory, with 2013 Champion Frederick Van Lierde finishing 8th on the day, and a host of other professionals and countless age groupers relying on the technical advantages of Castelli tri gear to achieve their personal bests. “The input and feedback of the sport’s top professionals has been crucial in the development of our entire range of triathlon apparel.”       “We couldn’t be happier for Rinny,” said Castelli Brand Manager Steve Smith.  “The input and feedback of the sport’s top professionals has been crucial in the development of our entire range ...

Paolo Bettini

This year’s World Championship has been described as a sprinter’s course, but the Italian ‘Commissario Tecnico’, team manager of the Italian national squad, Paolo Bettini has warned that any eventual winner on September 25th will have to be far more than just a fast finisher. Earlier this year, Paolo Bettini made a trip to the Danish capital to get the first impression of the race course.

Speaking yesterday, Bettini said, “The World Championships circuit is not really complicated – only the final is complicated. But if it is raining or windy, it will be a really hard race.”
