Through orange groves in Sierra Nevada

The Spanish south coast attracts both professional cyclists and winter-weary amateurs with their fine roads. At the foot of the Sierra Nevada and with the Mediterranean Sea within easy reach, we set out cycling in hilly terrain through olive and orange groves. With a few stops for a cortado. From Malaga we take the motorway one hour east before we turn north into a valley where the sun shines on the yellow coloured rock massif as we drive into the small community Vélez de Benaudalla. The main street runs in north-south direction with the church in the center and with white stone houses close up on both sides of the road. The fortress at the height reminds visitors of the city’s Arabic roots. Here we find some small grocery stores, a bakery, a couple of cafes and restaurants. Pensi a Verona e subito la associ agli innamorati. E l’amore infinito è anche quello del Giro d’Italia per la città veneta famosa per Romeo e Giulietta, che per la quarta volta chiuderà le tre settimane di passione rosa che hanno pervaso tutto il Belpaese. Non sarà una tappa banale perché si correrà contro il tempo, come avvenne per la prima volta nel 1981, quando il norvegese Knut Knudsen fu il vincitore di giornata, mentre le grandi celebrazioni furono tutte per Giovanni Battaglin che, dopo aver trionfato il 10 maggio alla Vuelta di Spagna, il 7 giugno si aggiudicò il secondo Grande Giro consecutivo in poche settimane. Dopo quella magica primavera, il veneto non riuscì mai più a salire sul podio in nessuna delle tre corse a tappe più celebri. Un finale thrilling ci fu, invece, nel 1984, con l’Arena di Verona che esplose per la splendida rimonta di Francesco Moser. Ci provi, ci riprovi e niente. Non ti lasciano proprio andare. Oppure ce la fai, sei solo o in gruppetto, e per un centinaio di chilometri sogni di arrivare a braccia alzate, ma senti il fiato sul collo del gruppo che da un momento all’altro può spezzare ogni tua brama di vittoria. La fuga è così, un azzardo, un po’ come giocare al casinò: rischi e magari non ti gira mai sulla ruota giusta. Oppure sì, va come deve andare e ti regali una giornata da leone, come quella di Dario Cataldo che, dopo 218 km di fuga in compagna di Mattia Cattaneo, domenica ha trionfato nella quindicesima tappa sulle strade rese celebri da una classica monumento quale il Giro di Lombardia. Una corsa che nel 2016 rischiò di vincere Diego Rosa, quando fu secondo alle spalle di Esteban Chaves. Il trentenne piemontese è un altro che di fughe se ne intende e il suo arrivo con la bicicletta alzata al cielo dopo il successo nella 5ª tappa del Giro dei Paesi Baschi 2016, a coronamento di una avventura solitaria di più di 100 km, è ancora negli occhi di tutti.
