Tour de France 2019 – Colombia stands upside down

When Egan Bernal signed for Team Sky two years ago all experts agreed that the only 22-year-old Colombian is a rough diamond with a promising future ahead. Before the season Egan wasn’t even supposed to ride the Tour. He should have been the dedicated captain for the Giro d’Italia in May. But it was to be different. His crash including a broken collarbone and another setback for the team – Chris Froome’s fatal crash – ultimately led to Team INEOS’ dual leadership for the Tour. It’s pointless to speculate how this fact influenced the progress of the race this year but opened some new possibility and tactical options, especially for the three decisive mountain stages in the final week. Three stages where Egan Bernal proved that he clearly was the strongest climber this year and laid the foundation to take the yellow jersey. What is happening behind the scenes before a time trail

Geraint Thomas put in a strong enough performance in the final time trial to seal overall victory at the 2018 Tour de France with just the Paris stage to come. Stage 20 offered a unique opportunity for the Castelli crew to follow the Welshman when his TT suit was fitted, to warm up, through bike check, and right to the start ramp.                         Photo & video by Marco Nani
