The heat blanketing the Middle East is affecting the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha. Riders have complained of extreme conditions and have exhibited signs of heat exhaustion, with several individuals requiring medical assistance. To give the Italian National Road Cycling Team an innovative edge, the Castelli Speed Research Unit and Politecnico di Milano have developed a jersey with titanium dioxide sun protection and cooling panels to help the riders beat the heat. Beating the heat, or rather minimizing its negative effects on performance. It’s not just the temperature that matters, but also the humidity and airflow. And what does it mean to race in these conditions? When the body temperature rises above 39 degrees (to the heat generated by muscular effort is added that from the sun’s radiation), oxygen transfer from hemoglobin to body tissues is impaired, with a corresponding decline in performance. A 2 percent reduction in weight due to dehydration reduces performance by 8 to 10 percent. Heat dissipation takes place largely through the evaporation of sweat. However, excessive sweating leads to the most dangerous enemy, dehydration, because there is a limit to how much fluid an individual can replenish. A 2 percent reduction in weight ...

Since then has grown to be become something of an institution amongst cyclists in New York City and has spawned additional races in London, Barcelona and Milan. Last Saturday we were in Milan (the final) and we saw an awesome race, we were in a sort of Formula One event with all the ingredients: warm-up, qualifying rounds, excellent foods, beautiful girls, fashion characters and so on! David Millar presents new styles in the Chpt./// clothing range.  Pronounced “chapter three”, Chpt./// x Castelli is a unique collaboration between British pro David Millar and Castelli, with whom he worked closely for much of his professional career. “Our origins lay in racing, and we’ll always love going fast, but from now on there will be no sacrificing style for speed. This is our second range of products, there are more currently in development, but we are proud to have this creative collaboration with Castelli to bring style and elegance to the world of performance cycling apparel,” said David Millar. The Chpt./// uses premium fabrics quality fabric materials, notably in the super light jersey and in the Rocka. Chpt.///’s version of the popular Gabba jersey. The designs take their greatest inspiration from tailoring. Described by Millar as “the cutting edge of fashion,” the Chpt./// team even consulted with renowned tailor Timothy Everest to perfect the lines and cut on both the light jersey and the Rocka. Contrast linings reference Millar’s sartorial interest, as does the color palette.

PERFETTO LIGHT SHORT SLEEVE JERSEY: PRO-REQUESTED PERFECTION There’s no denying that the Gabba short-sleeve jersey has been a game changer in pro cycling. Most of the peloton pulls it out whenever the weather is cold or wet. But sometimes the Gabba is too much. The Gabba’s allover protection can make it feel too warm for racing in merely cool conditions, so some of the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team riders asked for protection like the Gabba but with more breathability for milder temperatures. Enter the versatile Perfetto Light. It’s a lightweight, more breathable option with the same weather-resistant qualities and aerodynamic fit that helped the Gabba conquer the cycling world. It has the same cut as the Gabba and combines a lightweight windproof and water-resistant Windstopper® 150 material on the front, shoulders and sleeves (25% lighter than the fabric used on the Gabba) with a water-resistant Nano Light Pro on the back (an unbrushed version of the Nano Flex fabric, which is highly water repellent and stretchy but has no membrane to inhibit air exchange). The fabric is very tightly knit so you don’t feel the wind coming through, but it is open enough to prevent the moisture buildup that you can experience with ...
