It has almost been six months since my last race. During that period, many things changed for me. I switched my race bike and riding the new Felt IA for this season. It took some time to get used to it but right now, I’m more than happy with my new weapon. 2015 started with a big training camp on Gran Canary in January. I wanted to build a solid base for my first races this year, Challenge Dubai & Ironman 70.3 Philippines. As I always lose time in the water, I decided to set my focus on the swim for the first camp. After that camp, I felt well prepared for two half-distance races within nine days. My first priority race was Ironman 70.3 Philippines, because I try to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See later this year. One week before, I planned to compete in Challenge Dubai, the opener of the new “Triple Crown Series”. The days prior to the race went pretty well and I was keen on showing my improvements I achieved over the winter. Dubai Race day – change of plans: All I could do on race morning was pick up my ...

frederik van lierde, ironman, south africa, Triathlon, world champion -

Belgian Frederik Van Lierde made no secret of the fact that he came ideally prepared to Port Elizabeth and fight for the victory. To secure his 2015 Kona slot he would only have to finish the race. But that’s not his character. The 2013 Ironman World Champion is confident to peak three times this year (Ironman Germany and Kona to follow) and set off to outclass the rest of the field. Right from the start at Nelson Mandela Bay, Van Lierde was always among the leaders. He entered T1 in 3rd place and subsequently put the hammer down on the bike. The Belgian set the fastest bike split of the day with 4:32:45, followed by a time of 2:49:45 for the concluding marathon. Well enough for an unchallenged victory despite strong competitors. Van Lierde after the race: “I came to Africa to win, and I did. Even though I didn’t break the record, I am happy with a win for now. Next time I will take the record.” Top 3 men: 1. 2013 Ironman World Champion Frederik van Lierde was introduced as an Ironman ambassador today. “Being an IRONMAN World Champion is a real honour to me so I really want to engage and support people in becoming an IRONMAN as well. Van Lierde will already kick off his season with Ironman South Africa next weekend followed by a few shorter events. Frederik selected the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt as his second long distance race, where a rematch with 2014 winner and world champion Sebastian Kienle is very likely. It’s only natural, that Ironman Hawaii will be his main objective in the second half of the year. With a magnificent race at the Challenge Bahrain, Michael Raelert has ended a phenomenal 2014 season for Castelli.  The 34-year old won the first edition of the half-distance event in the Kingdom of Bahrain on Santa Claus day in 3:36:04 hours. Michael Raelert took the win ahead of his fellow countryman Andreas Dreitz (3:38:23 hours) and Australian Tim Reed (3:39:26 hours). As all year Michael benefited from the aero and performance advantage of Castelli’s FREE tri collection. “I’m totally happy. I’m absolutely over the moon. This is a fantastic end of the season. When you win a race, it always feels good, but if you can even win a big race like this one, it’s just overwhelming. And the most important thing is: I’m back after my injury.” In the past few weeks there have been many rumors about the new event in Bahrain. It was not only the flat race course which promised a superb race, but especially a stellar pro field. “If you read all these names, you are anything else but cool when you start into such a race,” said Michael Raelert after the finish on the Formula 1 circuit of Manama. He came down the finish ...

Michael Raelert has finished his trip to Australia with a great victory at the Ironman 70.3 Ballarat. It’s been his 4th win in an Ironman 70.3 event this year after conquering Rügen, Miami and Mandurah. In 3:48:33 the 34-year old won the race in the southeast of Australia in a sovereign way. Australian Jamie Huggett was runner-up in 3:57:33 only one second ahead of his fellow countryman Luke Bell. Michael Raelert after crossing the line: “It was a really tough race. It was cold, wet and windy. In the beginning of the race the wind was not too strong, but at the end it was pretty stormy.” Already in water, Michael Raelert could open up a little gap on the 1.9 km long course. He exited the water after 23:57 minutes, leading Australian co-favorite Luke Bell by 11 seconds. Matt Bailey from Australia followed in third place only two seconds behind Luke Bell. On the bike, it was on Michael Raelert and Luke Bell to ride away from the rest of the field and to put a lot of time on their pursuers. “Due to the conditions, it was challenging to keep the rhythm high. It was tough to pace yourself at ...
