You know the season has really started when the pro peloton lines up in Milan to make the very long journey to the coast and the finish line in San Remo. This Saturday the top classics riders will battle it out in the first big appointment of the season. The 291-kilometer route is identical to last year’s, with the Poggio crested with 5.4 kilometers remaining and the finish on Via Roma. Last year, Michal Kwiatkowski, Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe attacked on the Poggio. Following a brilliant descent, the race came down to a thrilling three-up sprint, with Kwiato taking the win (see video below). Though the race is often viewed as a sprinters’ classic, the finale with the climbs of the Cipressa and Poggio provides opportunities for punchy climbers, northern classics riders and breakaway specialists to try to escape the sprinters. THE HISTORY Milan-San Remo, also called “The Spring Classic” or “La Classicissima,” marks the real start of the classics season and is the first Monument of the year. With the first official edition held in 1907, Milan-San Remo has a long history, and it is one of the few races to retain its long distance of almost 300 ...

Castelli was born in 1876, if we count the time when it was called Vittore Gianni, as the business was known when it was taken over from the eponymous Milanese owner by Maurizio’s father. But since 2003 the brand has belonged to a company in the province of Belluno, Manifattura Valcismon. The Belluno-based company is certainly not a newcomer to the technical sportswear sector. Quite the contrary — the Cremonese family, now in its third generation, has worked in the textile industry since 1946. Founded in Lamon, by Olindo and Irma Cremonese, the company moved in 1954 to Fonzaso, where the headquarters are still located today. The turning point came with the couple’s son, Giordano, who loved sports, especially cross-country skiing, and initiated a true business transformation during the ’70s and ’80s that led the company to become a manufacturer of technical sportswear. Now, heading up the company together with Giordano are his four children: Dario, Alberto, Gioia and Alessio. A love of sports and a passion for cycling are the keys to business success that have brought Manifattura Valcismon today to guide the Castelli brand.   DR. For the 1989 edition of the Tour de France, Castelli had the Italian pop painter and sculptor, Mario Schifano, to design the official Tour leader jerseys. Yellow, King of the Mountains, Green, Red and Combination. (There was no white jersey, for best young rider, awarded in the 1989 Tour.) Mario Schifano did a great job of enhancing and modernizing the look of the jerseys, by incorporating colorful and dynamic graphics into the traditional designs of the official jerseys. The strength of the PDM team was reflected by not only winning the team classification and having four cyclists in the top ten of the general classification, but also by winning four of the five secondary individual classifications: Sean Kelly won both the points and intermediate sprints classifications, Gert-Jan Theunisse won the mountains classification and Steven Rooks won the combination classification. The young rider classification was won by French Fabrice Philipot from the Toshiba team. YELLOW – OVERALL CLASSIFICATION Greg Lemond won the “Maillot Jaune” this year in what many consider the greatest Tour ever, when he beat Laurent Fignon by 8 seconds in the final stage. Castelli has always represented the finest in Italian quality and performance cycling clothing. Castelli traces its roots back to a fine tailor (Vittore Gianni) in the heart of Milan, founded in 1876. The first cycling clothing was made in the 1910s for world champion Alfredo Binda then later Fausto Coppi and many of the stars through cycling’s golden age. The Castelli brand has introduced a series of firsts in cycling clothing: the first Lycra shorts used in racing and sold to the public, the first colored shorts, the first sublimation printed jerseys, the first synthetic winter clothing, the first use of windproof membranes, the first hydrophylic fabric treatments, the first anatomic seatpad, the lightest jersey ever produced, and the most aerodynamic jersey ever produced. Today Maurizio Castelli’s vision is the driving force in the company: to create the most innovative clothing for the cyclist seeking maximum performance. Castelli, based in northeastern Italy, is sold in 39 countries throughout the world.
