Competitive field at Ironman 70.3 European Championship

This Sunday Wiesbaden will host the Ironman 70.3 European Championship for the 9th time. The race offers a challenging, yet scenic course in southwest Germany. Lake “Raunheimer Waldsee” is the venue for the 1,9 k swim. A challenging 90 k bike loop will lead the athletes into a series of hilly climbs with steep descents. The concluding half marathon, splitted into a four-loop course, takes athletes through downtown Wiesbaden and has a drawn-out descent that lends itself to a spectacular, spectator-filled finish. After winning Müritz Triathlon two weeks ago, Andreas is well prepared to compete in a strong field of almost 70 professional male athletes. After his DNF and a solid block of training Andreas Giglmayr is keen on starting into a successful second half of the season in Wiesbaden. Local hero Matthias Knossalla probably knows the course better than any other actor. He has had a difficult summer when he was only able to swim for six weeks after he crashed out of Ironman 70.3 Mallorca in May. The Ironman European Championship in pictures

Conditions were brutal at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt with temperatures close to the 40-degree Celsius mark. Both Castelli Pro triathletes – Frederik van Lierde and Andreas Raelert – were not completely satisfied with the outcome and missed the podium. Frederik finished 5th and Andreas came in at 6th position.

Fraser Cartmell 6th at Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau

Some of the best triathletes came together last weekend at the newly established Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau (formerly known as Challenge Kraichgau) in the South West of Germany. Castelli athlete Fraser Cartmell placed 6th in a strong field that also doubled as the German Championships and was won by reigning Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle ahead of Ironman 70.3 St. Pölten dominator Andi Böcherer. Unusually for so early in the summer the race was held as a non-wetsuit swim due to the exceptionally hot weather in the week previous warming the lake temperature above the 22 °C. This suited Fraser’s swim strength fairly well and he exited the water in the top 5 right behind the leaders. Early in the bike Kienle and Andreas Böcherer pulled away through the rolling countryside and established a huge lead on the remainder of the field into T2. Fraser was part of a chase group of around 7 athletes that followed. Two victories for Raelert Brothers this weekend

Both Raelert Brothers had a successful weekend by winning two half distances races in Linz (Michael) and Vierlanden (Andreas). The start was made by Michael on Saturday, who took the victory at the 11th Linz Triathlon thanks to an impressive performance. The 34-year-old won the competition over the half Ironman distance of 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21.1 km run in 3:58:10 hours. Michael Raelert clocked a new course record ahead of the two Austrians Paul Ruttmann (4:07:17) and Jan-Hinrich Klindworth (4:25:58). Michael after the race: “It was hot, it was nice, it was fast. Above all, it was a lot of fun. After the bitter disappointment of Mallorca, this race was very important to me. At the Ironman 70.3 Mallorca he was not allowed to fight for the podium due to a difficult technical issue during the bike ride. “Thinking about Zell am See, I hope I can profit from this race here in Linz for my further preparation. Mirinda Carfrae triumphed at Challenge Roth

Triple Ironman Hawaii world champion Mirinda Carfrae never did a long distance race in Europe before. For her first appearance she decided on racing the 30th anniversary of classic Challenge Roth, a triathlon with a long history and probably one of the most popular tri events all over the world. The whole region of “Landkreis Roth” is celebrating this race year by year and the support of locals and volunteers is unique. More than 200.000 spectators cheered for the athletes and the slogan “We are Family” isn’t just an empty platitude. Conditions were Kona-like with temperatures up to 35°C as the day progresses. But one thing at a time: Athletes were released in 16 waves starting at 06:30 with all the Pros and some top age group athletes. What’s special about this is that the swim is held in the canal of Main-Danube. Orientation – sometimes a challenge for open water swims – isn’t a big issue. Mirinda – who arrived about ten days before race day – was a bit in doubt about her shape at this time of the year since she never did a long distance race at that moment.
