Leeds, UK. It’s the Wednesday before the Tour de France and it’s the first time we catch up with Andrew since his epic win at the Dauphiné. While it would have been cool to have actually been at the Dauphiné finish, that would have meant missing the most riveting day of racing and seeing every move on TV. When Andrew rolled into the hotel lobby, you could see the change in the man. He had a lighter step. And a big smile. He exuded confidence, but not a cocky confidence. Just calm confidence. We met Andrew at the team training camp in his first year at Garmin-Cervélo in 2011. He was gracious enough to sit down for a couple of long chats touching on everything from his goals, his thoughts on joining Garmin, the new generation of clean cyclists, and the difference that clothing can make at this level. Andrew immediately impressed as a bright, articulate neo pro but certainly didn’t lack in ambition or confidence. Some journalists called him cocky which didn’t quite sit with what we saw. I’d say it was more of an inward focus on getting the best out of himself. He started 2011 with a ...

Pupils dilated and blank, vaguely focused on an indeterminate point that no observer will ever see—it’s known as the 1,000-yard stare, a term used to describe the expression of a battle-weary soldier. When Nathan Brown finally reached the summit atop Mt. Diablo, he had spent nearly 5 hours in the saddle in 90-degree heat. Sweat poured from his body; perspiration had spread and then fixed itself in salt patterns across his jersey; and road grit had somehow found its way onto his face. “I was really suffering from the heat and came undone about 3K from the top,” said Nathan. “I have never been so happy to reach the finish as I was that day.” As a neo-pro coming off a U-23 season, Nathan had to deal with the grueling pace set by the pro peloton as it raced up Mt. Diablo, all the while trying to help keep Garmin-Sharp teammate, Rohan Dennis, in a position to fight for the win. As the stage was determined over the final kilometer at the summit of Mt. Diablo, it was Dennis who surged ahead for the victory, arms raised in celebration. Crossing the line shortly after, Nathan slumped to the ground, exhausted. For ...

castelli, garmin, Millar, nothing, Paris-Roubaix -

200 men stood ready in Compiègne waiting to begin the 2014 edition of Paris-Roubaix, 200 individual stories rich in texture and unique all their own. How each man came to be there, at that moment, is surely a testament to strength of will, perseverance and dedication. One story in particular stands out for us and that is David Millar’s. After 17 years as a professional, after completing a dozen Tours de France (winning stages and earning the yellow jersey), after numerous completions of the Giro and Vuelta, after winning national championships and numerous international races he stood in Compiègne with thoughts and emotions usually reserved for us mortals. You see—he had never completed Paris-Roubaix, he had tried many times…but couldn’t. So for the first time since he was 17 years old he was in a race to “finish,” to overcome self-doubt, apprehension and good old fashioned fear, to slay the dragon which had eluded him. For those of us who ride—maybe even race a bit—we understand, so go behind the scenes and listen to David in his own words and learn just how he came to be there, at that moment and how he found the strength within to see ...

Daniel Martin enters this year’s Giro d’Italia as the great outsider of the GC. He openly admits that he still hasn’t proved that he can perform regularly with the very best over three weeks of racing and this makes his performance very uncertain. At the same time, he has mostly shined in one-day races and on shorter climbs where he can make use of his explosive climbing skills while he has had a harder time in the high mountains. This year’s Giro will obviously be decided in the final week which is loaded with long, regular climbs and it is another question how Martin will handle those strains. Over the last year, the Garmin rider has stepped up his level massively and his performance in the last two editions of Liege-Bastogne-Liege and last year’s Il Lombardia prove that he is now one the world’s leading contenders for the hilly classics. As a grand tour contender, however, he is almost a completely blank page. He has already done six three-week races but so far he has rarely had a focus on the overall standings. Instead, he has always underlined his approach of treating the races as 21 consecutive one-day classics and ...

Gorge-Roubaix-header

The Gorge Roubaix race near The Dalles, Oregon doubled up this year to become a two-day event for its second edition and, although the event is still young, it’s quickly becoming a classic and a racer’s favorite. Flat tires and mechanicals decimated the Hosmer Chiro-RPM Mortgage team in 2013, but year two ended up a whole lot better, with Stephen Bedford winning both days and the overall competition.
