Wearing the SanRemo Suit is like riding in a skinsuit but with a lot more comfort Lot’s of cycling enthusiasts may remember spring 2011. It was the first time this suit was race-introduced by Team Garmin-Cervélo at Milan-San Remo. But the history of development dates back a bit more far behind.

The riders of Garmin-Barracuda have been reaping the aero benefits of the SanRemo SpeedSuit for over a year, and now those advantages are being extended to a wider audience.

Castelli kicked off the Italian launch of its highly innovative 2012 products (Castelli Passion Day) with a brief tour of the company’s headquarters in Fonzaso, Italy, and an afternoon bike ride in the fastest bit of clothing for road racing, the SanRemo Speedsuit.

Not sure how a Barracuda ‘attacks’ but safe to say that it attacks like Sep Vanmarcke. Over 200 kilometers in windy conditions on flemish roads, Vanmarcke did everything right, just waiting for the right moment to strike while saving extra energy wearing possibly the fastest bit of clothing ever created for road racing – the Castelli SanRemo SpeedSuit. It didn’t hurt that he had on the Aero Race gloves and Aero Race shoe covers too. The SanRemo SpeedSuit,  jersey-and-shorts combo, effectively enables riders to wear a skinsuit in road races and thus gain an aerodynamic advantage. Testing shows that at 40km/h, the jersey saves between twelve and fifteen watts of energy when compared to a standard clothing combination. It is, it says, worth 45 seconds in time savings. Congratulations to Sep Vanmarcke for netting the Sanremo Speedsuit’s first victory in 2012 on the flemish roads of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Flecha launches. Boonen sweeps past and has it … but he ties up, and Vanmarcke comes back, to take it by two bike lengths and joyously punching ...

When Johan Van Summeren and Fabian Cancellara staged their famous pursuit match in the final kilometers of Paris-Roubaix on a hot, dusty, dry April day in Hell, the Belgian had something special on his side against the Swiss powerhouse – a critical piece of kit that might have been the difference between sweet cobble kissing victory and a late catch by the dominant force on the pave this spring – the Castelli Sanremo Speedsuit.

It’s a heady claim, but Castelli’s ingeniously designed short/jersey combo slash skinsuit is claimed to save a rider significant time: 10-15 watts at 40 km/h. With a rapidly emptying rear tire, following a huge effort in the break, Van Summeren was certainly not hindered by his choice of clothing on the day.
