Red Hook Crit Number 5. Brooklyn NY.

Some of the nation’s best road racers turned out Saturday March 24th in Brooklyn, NY, to compete in the Red Hook Criterium, an un-sanctioned street race, now in its fifth edition. As with the RH Milano Crit last October, Castelli continued its support of the series by providing RH Brooklyn jerseys for the event.

For both racers and spectators, Red Hook is a dramatic venue. The vestiges of old industry and shipyards loom in the dark. Across the East River, Manhattan glows and flickers.

The 100-rider field set out strong, but quickly became fragmented as the contenders pressed a determined pace. Making a move on the 4th lap, Dan Chabanov escaped into the dark ahead of the field and powered to a solo finish after 24 laps. The demands of the course and lap eliminations diminished the field to just 28 riders making it across the line.

Italy’s Francesco Martucci, having been awarded a ticket to New York after a strong 4th place finish at RH Milano, finished 15th. Raffaelei Maccara, Italy’s best-placed rider, finished 8th.
