Tour de France 2019 – Colombia stands upside down
When Egan Bernal signed for Team Sky two years ago all experts agreed that the only 22-year-old Colombian is a rough diamond with a promising future ahead. Before the season Egan wasn’t even supposed to ride the Tour. He should have been the dedicated captain for the Giro d’Italia in May. But it was to be different. His crash including a broken collarbone and another setback for the team – Chris Froome’s dramatic crash – ultimately led to Team INEOS’ dual leadership for the Tour.
It’s pointless to speculate how this fact influenced the progress of the race this year but opened some new possibility and tactical options, especially for the three decisive mountain stages in the final week.
The three stages where Egan Bernal proved that he clearly was the strongest climber this year and laid the foundation to take the yellow jersey.
