Tour de France 2019 – Colombia stands upside down

When Egan Bernal signed for Team Sky two years ago all experts agreed that the only 22-year-old Colombian is a rough diamond with a promising future ahead. Before the season Egan wasn’t even supposed to ride the Tour. He should have been the dedicated captain for the Giro d’Italia in May. But it was to be different. His crash including a broken collarbone and another setback for the team – Chris Froome’s fatal crash – ultimately led to Team INEOS’ dual leadership for the Tour. It’s pointless to speculate how this fact influenced the progress of the race this year but opened some new possibility and tactical options, especially for the three decisive mountain stages in the final week. Three stages where Egan Bernal proved that he clearly was the strongest climber this year and laid the foundation to take the yellow jersey. TdF 2018 – Powerful teamwork to seal G’s maillot jaune

The past three weeks haven proven in an impressive way that the most important bike race can only be won if everyone is moving in the same direction. As an individual person one might be able to shine for a day or two but going through thick and thin requires full dedication of every single team member. Geraint Thomas‘ has not only won the 6th Tour for Team Sky but also celebrated two stage victories including the prestigious arrival at Alpe d’Huez.
