PHOTO ESSAY: Tour of Beijing, Martin finishes second

Dan Martin sealed his second place overall in the Tour of Beijing today, ending the five day race just three seconds behind the winner Philippe Gilbert (BMC) and showing again that he has hit a form peak towards the end of the season. Martin’s run of form makes up for what was an at-times frustrating season. He crashed on the final bend of Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April, losing his chance of taking a second straight victory, and also fell on the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, sustaining a fractured collarbone. He missed the Tour de France but bounced back to take second on a stage and seventh overall in the Vuelta a Espana. Bad luck struck him again in the world road race championships when he was caught up in a crash and delayed, losing his chance. However since then things have gone better for him; he put in a superbly-timed attack to win the Il Lombardia Classic earlier this month, then took that stage win plus second overall in the Tour of Beijing. Some of the world’s best fixie-speed specialists turned out Saturday October 11th in Milan, Italy, to compete in the Red Hook Crit Milano, an un-sanctioned street race, now in its fifth edition. RHC Milano No. 5 – Fixie Speed Specialists

The fifth edition of the Red Hook Criterium Milan ticks all the boxes for a great cycling party central, its fun, sociable, enjoyable, sociable, fast and exhilarating as 100 fixed gear bicycles tackled the 1.2 kilometers race course over multiple laps of a fast twisty route within the desolate streets in the Bovisa area of Milan. The field consists of elite-level road, track, cyclocross, and mountain bike racers, bike messengers and urban cyclists. The RHC has developed a unique style of cycling event that combines the underground art of street racing with the intensity of high-level competition in a spectator-friendly atmosphere. The Romanian street-speed specialist and last years winner, Edward Grosu, took his third RHC victory, while the podium was completed by Italian Ivan Ravaioli in second and Julio Padilla of Guatemala in third place. Michael Raelert wins Ironman 70.3 Rügen

Past weekend has been high-flying for lots of Castelli triathletes. Scotsman Fraser Cartmell finished second at Ironman Wales (Pembrokeshire), 4 minutes behind winner Matt Trautman (RSA). Laura and Greg Bennett did and olympic distance race and both placed 3rd at Beijing International Triathlon. Without no doubt, the most notably results were achieved at the first edition of Ironman 70.3 Rügen. Michael Raelert triumphed ahead of Castelli brand mate Matthias Knossalla and Edo van der Meer from the Netherlands. Talking about Rügen, conditions were rough on race day and organizers had to cancel the swim due to heavy rain, storm and harsh waves at the Baltic Sea Coast in Binz. So the Ironman 70.3 was transformed into a duathlon event. Instead of the 1.9 km long swim a 5-kilometer run was the prelude. “It’s always a pity, when it is impossible to make the entire route, but under these conditions, a swim would not have been a good idea. It was a very challenging race for all competitors. Today, everyone has felt how hard the conditions have been,” said Michael Raelert.
