Keeping track of cycling gear when going to a race or training camp can be a hassle. The Castelli race bag collection is constructed from incredibly strong and water resistant materials, smart design, and enough storage space to handle any contingency you might encounter. The new range of luggage has been designed with cyclists in mind. All products in the range feature the company’s striking black and red livery and most have cyclist-specific features. We were sent a Rolling Travel Bag, Rolling Travel Bag XL, Gear Backpack, Gear Dufflebag, an Undersaddle Mini and an Undersaddle XL to check out. ROLLING TRAVEL BAG Castelli describes the Rolling Travel Bag as “perfect for a weekend race trip”. At 35cm x 42cm x 25cm it’s small enough to be considered hand luggage with most airlines but with a capacity of 42 litres it also allows you to store a reasonable amount. The bag features one large internal pocket and one smaller, padded pocket, in addition to an external pocket which contains a pouch for storing your valuables. The “low density wheels” ensure the bag rolls smoothly to begin with — the real test is whether they stand up after months and years of being dragged and ...

Kristian Sbaragli took a breakthrough victory yesterday at the La Vuelta stage 10 wearing the fastest aero jersey and short on the market. The wind-cheating properties of the Aero Race 5.0 jersey are so effective that you’ll save an average of 20 watts at 40km/h and around 35-40 seconds saved over an hour. Furthermore, the aero Velocity fabric is quick-drying and boasts a low weight keeping the jersey to a claimed 103 grams for a size large. Additionally, the fabric has a tightly knit weave that manages laminar airflow over the body.  The Free Aero Race Bib-short is further evidence of Castelli’s dedication to making clothing that provides a competitive advantage for top athletes. After 3 years in development, Castelli’s new top-of-the-line race short represents a significant increase in muscle support and comfort to go along with the wind tunnel tests that show a reducing power output by 10 watt savings at 50 km/hr compared to the outgoing model, Free Bib-short. The secret to these gains lies in how the shorts manage airflow across their multiple boundaries and textures — most obviously via the dimpling across the shorts’ outer plane.  Our best race short is now both more comfortable and more aerodynamic and represents the ...

Castelli are renowned for making garments that stand the test of time. But one item they produce has been more than just a game changer. It’s caused rival manufactures to sit up and try to keep up, it’s changed what many riders now expect from cycle clothing, it’s caused a tremor in the cycle clothing world that will surely be felt for a long time to come. You probably guessed what said item is, the now renowned Gabba. You know you’ve produced something special when it has an impact on the culture it was intended for, this may be the mainstream culture, a sub culture or in this case cycling culture. History has several examples of clothing making an impact on the culture of its time, changing and in some cases challenging how people think a product should look or perform. Mary Quant can lay claim to being the brains behind the mini skirt, it shook mainstream culture in a way that very few clothes had or have since. It was a rebellious item and still is, even 4 decades on. It screams what youth culture was at all about in the 60’s. Tennis culture had Stan Smith and Adidas, ...

Usually it’s my girlfriend who gets excited by bags, normally the handbag variety. This time around it was my time to get excited about a bag. Finally after daydreaming and wondering as to when and if Castelli would release a range of luggage, they sprung it on us fans. A strong line up of roller bags for flying, wet bags for storing cycling kit and saddle packs. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the Castelli backpacks. And a stunning black and red thing it is too. I was given the bag a few weeks back at the start of the Giro. Since then I’ve had plenty of time to fill it with everything from groceries to the cycling kit that I’m sure it was intended to carry, it had a short but intensive testing from me, being my go to back on every occasion I’ve needed to carry stuff. What I’ve found is that the design team at Castelli have produce a product that hits what a backpack should offer and work like. It’s a bag that does its job remarkably well and to boot it looks damn lovely. The guys at Castelli don’t seem ...

If you do the long course, you might be in the saddle for up to 10 hours, so it’s very important that you wear the correct clothes for all day comfort and performance. In the summer months, it’s all about regulating your temperature, to save you from overheating, especially on the climbs. The Maratona jersey is made out of a 3D fabric on front and shoulders to keep the jersey light and dry. The 3D nature of the fabric means that most of it never touches your skin, so it never clings or absorbs water. This challenge to wear the right gear is coupled with the need to prepare for those cool descents where air flow can cause your body temperature to drop. Discover more: Castelli-cycling.com/c/maratona The full 138km Maratona course takes riders over five 2,000m+ passes and the saw tooth profile means you are either ascending or descending throughout the day.
