As with so many of our products, it began with a problem, or at least the attempt to identify a solution to one. In this case, the questions revolved around how to dress in unpredictable weather, and how to avoid the unpleasantness of that clammy, wet feeling of cycling in the rain. Yes, we now have the option to escape to a virtual reality tucked dryly away in our caves of pain, but what do you do if, you know, you want to go ride your bike outside? When it might rain or – wait for it – it’s already raining? Which brings us back to the original question, put bluntly: how can we make riding in the cold and rain not suck?     Let’s rewind the tape ten years, to a particularly nasty November in 2009, when we sat down with Roger Hammond and Carlos Sastre of the Cervélo Test Team. Roger and Carlos lived in Belgium and the high mountains of Spain, respectively, and both spent considerable amounts of time in cold and wet conditions. Pros in general, although these two in particular, were the perfect cycling product testing Guinea pigs!     After a couple years ...

GABBA 2 is phenomenal because it keeps out the elements while offering excellent breathability and stretch combined with a perfect fit. Pro riders appreciate this product for racing in foul conditions but what does it represent for everyone else? You probably love it in any weather that doesn’t involve sunshine. This jersey keeps you warm and dry and provides protection from wind and light rain. But the real question is: why does Castelli offer a long sleeve version? Standard long sleeve jerseys are good to be worn as part of a layering system, but are they really suitable as an outer layer over a base layer? They can be used for summer evenings to take the chill off and for spring, autumn and winter months when the temperature is not too low. And what about rain and wind? Cyclists who are wearing a thermal long sleeve jersey probably also own a wind and water proof jacket to put on top when needed, increasing weight and “killing” performances, we are almost sure. So far, so good, but why not a product which is lightweight and aerodynamic like a jersey and protects almost like a jacket? GABBA 2 LONG SLEEVE JERSEY is a protective wind and waterproof jersey ...

Castelli’s new Tempesta line promises 100% waterproof protection with lightweight, extreme weather gear made from new fabrics from eVent & OutDry – here’s a closer look. By Richard Pestes, PezCyclingNews.com I talked to Castelli’s top product dawg Steve Smith while he was driving to his home in Bassano del Grappa on the same road where Fausto Coppi lost the 1950 Giro after touching wheels with another rider caused him to crash and break his hip. Living in Europe & Italy for many years has allowed Steve enviable exposure to road cycling in the sport’s heartland. It’s also given him easy access to the best textile mills and makers of technical fabrics, and daily access to the factory where he can oversee production of new items. It boils down to ‘zero-loss’ from concept to design to production. And that’s a big reason why Castelli has become so successful in the category. Another reason is that they just keep on pushing the envelope and setting new boundaries for performance cycling apparel. The newest wet weather line in stores now for winter, is the Tempesta line. The Tempesta jacket, Nano Flex Pro Bibtight, Tempesta gloves and shoecovers. I shot this with a flash, ...

Castelli are renowned for making garments that stand the test of time. But one item they produce has been more than just a game changer. It’s caused rival manufactures to sit up and try to keep up, it’s changed what many riders now expect from cycle clothing, it’s caused a tremor in the cycle clothing world that will surely be felt for a long time to come. You probably guessed what said item is, the now renowned Gabba. You know you’ve produced something special when it has an impact on the culture it was intended for, this may be the mainstream culture, a sub culture or in this case cycling culture. History has several examples of clothing making an impact on the culture of its time, changing and in some cases challenging how people think a product should look or perform. Mary Quant can lay claim to being the brains behind the mini skirt, it shook mainstream culture in a way that very few clothes had or have since. It was a rebellious item and still is, even 4 decades on. It screams what youth culture was at all about in the 60’s. Tennis culture had Stan Smith and Adidas, ...
