Castelli’s Gabba waterproof jersey needs little introduction. Since it came out in 2010, it has taken the pro peloton, and non-fairweather cyclists by storm. And that’s fair enough really, who wouldn’t want to make their bad weather riding a bit more comfortable? A quick recap: The Gabba is made from Gore X-lite plus, a lightweight windproof fabric with water-repellent properties. It’s designed by and for pros, so the fit is tight and racy. It has a storm-flap at the rear to protect the rider from wheel spray. We’re on the new and improved version now, imaginatively called Gabba 2. The biggest difference, and improvement, is the introduction of a wind flap for the full-length zip, keeping more wind and rain out than the previous version. The eyelets in the rear pockets have been replaced with mesh fabric at the bottom of the pockets for better drainage. Other features have remained the same: the aero fit, reflective piping on the three pockets, full-length zip, high collar and gripper hem. I guess by now it’ll be clear that pros like this one for racing in foul conditions, but where does it fit in for those not racing? I like wearing it in ...

After a grueling stage 5 summit finish that opened major gaps on the Tirreno-Adriatico GC, a mostly flat stage 6 did not offer quite the reprieve many might have expected, thanks to Gabba like weather conditions, cold and wet,  that confronted the peloton during the 210-kilometer stage from Rieti to Porto Sant’Elpidio. It was a textbook leadout by team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung as Boasson Hagen hit the front with Gerald Ciolek on his wheel at the 350m to go sign. The German speedster then started his sprint over the final 150m. Sagan, who was right on Ciolek ‘s wheel showed a quick acceleration to nab his first win since July 2014. Everything  looks promising for the African Team for Saturdays Milano-Sanremo, what some might call the truest sprint of the year. Photo: Slipstreamsports and MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung.

Wet days, I just call it Nano Flex days as these are the pieces that get used most during this time of the year. Commuting or riding at the weekends requires a little bit of a wardrobe change. It’s still not the climate for anything truly winters or summer yet, but the arms and knees can feel a little cold, even if the dial on the thermometer is reading the mid teens. The old adage that there’s no such thing as bad weather gave the birth to the Nano Flex concept. Nano Flex is a water repellent range of garments based on our warm fleecy Thermoflex material but with silicone filaments added to the surface. These filaments are what keeps the rain out, causing it to bead on the surface and be moved away by the wind. The  Nano Flex Warmers perform much as any regular set of warmers do in keeping the limbs at a more comfortable temperature, especially in the stop start environment of commuting. Heavy drizzle, road spray and riding through fog have little impact on these warmers and you’ll remain dry for a very long time. happens. It does have a saturation point, but in use, and unlike others, you ...
