MTN-Qhubeka wins Tour de Langkawi overall

After taking over the leader’s jersey in Saturday’s queen stage, MTN-Qhubeka’s Youcef Reguigui held on to yellow today to take the overall victory in the 2015 Tour de Langkawi. Today’s final stage was all that stood in the way of MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung claiming its first general classification victory of the year. At just 96km in distance, the stage was a fast and furious affair with multiple attacks going off the front in the early stages. With 13 riders within a minute of Youcef’s leader’s jersey, Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung were on high alert and monitoring each and every attack carefully. Eventually 4 riders were allowed to go clear. Rafaa Chtioui (Skydive Dubai), Bruno Pires (Tinkoff-Saxo), Leonardo Duque (Colombia) and Jonothan Clarke (United Healthcare) were the escapees. Duque was the most dangerous rider at only 51″ behind Youcef. After Daniel Teklehaimanot and Merhawi Kudus had to abandon the race with illness yesterday, the remaining 4 MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung went to the head of the race to control affairs. Preview: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad & Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne

This weekend will see the start of the cobbled spring classics when the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Both of these Belgian classics, just like all the others, are renowned for their harsh racing conditions: cold wet weather, wind, small roads, cobbled climbs and a big bunch. The racing is expected to be intense and unforgiving, a spectators dream. The Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung riders are up for the challenge this weekend as a successful spring classics campaign is one of the teams definite season goals. A positive start this weekend will set the team up nicely for the slightly more arduous classics to come. Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung will have 9 riders on hand this weekend with the final rosters for each race being determined closer to the race start. Edvald Boasson Hagen, Gerald Ciolek, Tyler Farrar, Theo Bos, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Kristian Sbaragli, Youcef Reguigui, Jay Thomson, Jaco Venter and Matt Brammeier are the riders hoping to show their hand at least one of the weekend’s races. MTN-Qhubeka to race Amgen Tour of California

MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung announced today that they have received an invitation to compete for the first time at this year’s Amgen Tour of California. The Amgen Tour of California is America’s premier cycling race and takes place from 10-17 May. The team has been invited to a series of top-level races. They received their first Grand Tour invitation to the Vuelta a España last year and recently received a wildcard invitation to compete at the Tour de France in July, making them the first African-registered team to compete at the French Grand Tour. The team have bolstered their roster this year with a series of new signings including Matthew Goss from Orica-GreenEdge, Tyler Farrar from Garmin-Sharp, Theo Boss from Belkin, Edvald Boasson Hagen from Team Sky and Steven Cummings from the BMC squad. American sprinter Farrar won stage 4 of the Tour of California during the 2013 edition.
