Jury Verdict It’s difficult to say which is longer, the list of features and technology found in the Kali Shiva full face helmet, or the list of safety standards which the lightweight lid conforms to. Either way Kali has packed a lot of hi-tech into the Shiva, and the result is a helmet that looks like any other downhill model but which conforms to the majority of the much more stringent motorbike safety standards. The additional protection means higher safety for the rider without making any compromises in comfort. Perfect for the increasingly demanding and faster speeds of race courses, a comprehensive accessories package rounds off this successful product.

Jury Verdict The RS abbreviation with the iXS Trail RS helmet stands for freeride icon Richie Schley, whose experience has flowed into the development process. And you can feel it: the Trail RS is a great all-round trail helmet which scores points with the jury above all for its exceptional fit. Big air vents prevent heat building up and ensure wearing the helmet is still pleasant even on hotter days whilst contributing to the attractive, sporty looks. The deep rear section covers a good area of your head and so increases the protection level. For € 99.95 iXS offers a great value product with the Trail RS.

Jury Verdict Whilst the majority of clipless pedal shoe designs have their roots in XC racing, the Giro Terraduro has been developed from the ground up for trail and enduro use. The successful result is a superbly comfortable and robust shoe which cuts a great figure both on the bike and whilst on foot. To achieve this Giro combine a nylon reinforced chassis with a comfortable and grippy Vibram sole, a mix which really works. The solid ratchet mechanism paired with two velcro flaps ensures a secure fit without pinching. A through-and-through bikers’ shoe wins a clear best buy for the Giro Terraduro!

Jury Verdict Researching new technology and introducing it into the top price categories is one thing. Bringing the same tech to the price point that non-sponsored full-time riders and normal earners can afford is another. That’s exactly what makes Giro’s new MIPS feature a worthy award winner. The MIPS technology aims to reduce rotational forces in case of a crash and thus reduce the risk of head injuries. The MIPS combines these technologies with proven features such as the well-engineered venting system and deep section rear, all at an affordable price.

Jury Verdict Five Ten has put serious work into the new Kestrel SPD shoes and you can feel it straight away. The 840 g (size 9) clipless pedal model scores with a great fit and shape, but also with the BOA lace system which allows the rider to easily adjust the fit whilst on the bike. The concept of using different durometer rubber compounds on the sole really works: thanks to the well-chosen rigidity and the typical Five Ten soft rubber at the heel and toes, the Kestrel also offers great grip and good shock absorption when walking. The harder mix around the cleat ensures it is easy to clip in and out of the pedals.
