A Look Back: Flying down the Carrefour de l’Arbre with Johan Vansummeren

Johan Vansummeren is almost two meters tall, 1.98 m, to be more precise, but he is also a man with a big engine who rode 15 Grand Tours in his career and took his most significant victory in the “Hell of the North” in 2011, after dropping his breakaway companions on the Carrefour de l’Arbre and riding solo into the famous velodrome. While browsing through the Castelli image archives recently, I came across these great catalog shots by the Grubers, taken on an unforgettable day in the north of France. It was a cold, damp December day in 2012, and Johan was bouncing over the cobbles from the Arenberg Forest to the Roubaix velodrome. The cobbled sections were covered in mud. A gravel or mountain bike would have been a better choice that day, but Johan rode his road bike with 25 mm tires sliding through every corner of the iconic pavé sections, cutting his way through the mud on the way to Roubaix. Together with the exceptional cycling photographers Jered and Ashley Gruber, we tagged along by car to capture some epic photos for the Castelli 2013 winter catalog. Matteo Trentin wins European Championships for Italy

Matteo Trentin finished off a well-planned team performance by the Italian squad on a rainy and cool day in Glasgow yesterday. “We rode perfectly as a team and I have to thank everyone who has supported me during my problems and injuries.” Matteo and most of his teammates were dressed in the Sanremo Speed Suit, an aerodynamic skinsuit for road racing. During the beginning of the 230k long race over 16 laps the Italians were covered in Gabba Jerseys, the ideal protection layer for a cool and wet Scottish day. Tim O’Donnell wins IM 70.3 Gdynia

Just one week after his 4th place at IM 70.3 Santa Rosa the Boulder-based athlete was again at the start in Poland. Tim managed a very good start and celebrated a start-to-finish victory this past Sunday ahead of the two Germans Nils Frommhold and Markus Liebelt. “I was excited to race. I took the lead in the swim, maintained my position on the bike and capped it off with the day’s fastest run.” Tim and Markus relied on the no-compromise race suit All Out Speed Suit. TOP 3 men: 1.
