Ironman® World Championships: All eyes on the defending champions?

One of Kona’s unwritten rules is: „Never bet against the champions of last year!“ In the end the race starts with a gunshot and equal opportunity for all athletes this Saturday. Last year’s race proved that being an outsider need not be a disadvantage when Andreas Raelert, whom only a few had on the radar on that day, stormed to 2nd place. Timothy O’Donnell, who especially set accents on the bike, finished 3rd. Not winning the race last year doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be promising perspectives to make a mark on race day. It’s a long and sometimes complex journey before crossing the line to the cheers of the crowd as a winner. A season has to be planned carefully because long distance triathletes only have a limited number of shots a year for a big race. Just like the pros, Castelli also leaves nothing to chance, and is constantly thinking of how to improve products so that athletes can enjoy as many such moments as possible. This includes selecting the right fabrics, optimizing the pattern design, extensive in-house tests, wind tunnel tests and, last but not least, listening to our athletes. The collaboration with athletes like triple Ironman® world champion Mirinda Carfrae is an essential part when working on improvements and future concepts.

Carfrae and Vanhoenacker win IRONMAN Austria

This year’s IRONMAN Austria in Klagenfurt was a total triumph for Castelli athletes, who took both the women’s and men’s titles at Lake Wörthersee. Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) looked strong right from the start and took charge halfway through the bike leg. On the bike the triple IRONMAN world champion gained an advantage from the aerodynamically optimized T1:Stealth W Top and clocked an incredible 4:47:39 bike split. With a concluding marathon of 2:49:06 (new PB), she set a new women’s race record to finish in 8:41:17. While Carfrae was racing in Austria for the first time, Marino Vanhoenacker was on the starting line for the 8th time. In the days prior to the race the Belgian had left no doubt that he would be the man to beat. However, his rivals put in everything they had and showed that they would not go down without a fight. It was not until KM 150 on the bike that he was able to distance his competitors, but he entered T2 with a race-best 4:19:57 bike split and a lead of 4:11.
