Innovated Continuously! a couple of firsts…

On 9 November 1979, Castelli won the prestigious Corriere dello Sport Discobolo award. The presentation letter says, “Castelli… has, in a truly futuristic way, revolutionized clothing for cyclists.” In 30 years, nothing has changed. Each and every day we set out to create tomorrow’s revolutionary futuristic clothing. Castelli has been at the forefront of essentially every breakthrough in cycling clothing since we made wool shorts obsolete. Stetina, looking back at his first Grand Tour. Part 1.

23-year-old Garmin-Cervelo talent, Peter Stetina, is the only remaining member of Jonathan Vaughters’ original 5280-Subaru development team, which formed in 2003. At that time, Peter was just 16, and even then, it was apparent that there was a future for the wiry climber in the sport.

Eight years on and the talent that was so evident even then, is starting to come good in a big way. Stetina rode and completed his first ever Grand Tour at this May’s Giro d’Italia. He not only made it through what was without question the most difficult Grand Tour in recent memory, but he managed an impressive 22nd place overall.

Stetina’s job wasn’t quite done following the Giro though – he headed over to Fonzaso to spend a couple days with Castelli – spending a full day shooting in the Dolomites for the Summer 2012 catalog, then a second day touring the Castelli facility. We sat down with Peter during that time to take a look back at his three weeks of racing in Italy.

The Castelli name has been built on innovation though – so with each new innovation, another one follows, and then another, as we seek to continually push the bar higher and higher on what’s possible in cycling clothing. Our latest innovation is a completely new take on two clothing set ups that we’ve come to believe were separate and limited to their own specific uses: the skinsuit and the jersey/short combo.
