Wiebes and Parkhotel Valkenburg reportedly settling dispute
Lorena Wiebes, who finished 2019 as the top-ranked rider in the women’s peloton, is settling her contract dispute with her Parkhotel Valkenburg team out of court, according to reports in Dutch media.
The star sprinter had been looking to break her contract with the squad and head elsewhere, and discussions apparently had reached a stalemate when news emerged Tuesday that the team was suing Wiebes. Now, Wiebes has told RTV Utrecht that her representatives and the team have reached an agreement that will see her race with Parkhotel at least for the first half of the season, with a possible transfer later in the year.
Sponsor owner Jos van de Mortel told De Limburger that it was a deal that would “satisfy no one,” but that “resolved is resolved.”
“Think of it as a temporary agreement,” he said. “For the time being, she is riding for us, but there may come a time when she will move to a different team. Her contract is being broken and a new settlement agreement is now being worked on.”
Wiebes won every stage and the overall title at the Tour of Chongming Island, the Prudential RideLondon Classique one-day race, and plenty of other big results in 2019 at just 20 years old. RTV Utretch reports that according to her manager, Wiebes has drawn interest from other big teams like Sunweb, CCC-Liv, Movistar, and Trek-Segafredo.
