UAE-Team Emirates pulls three riders from Burgos amid coronavirus concerns
UAE-Team Emirates pulled three riders from the Vuelta a Burgos on Wednesday due to their recent contact with someone who was confirmed for COVID-19.
The squad said in a press release that Sebastian Molano, Cristian Muñoz, and Camilo Ardila had been taken out of the race prior to Wednesday’s stage 2.
“The three Colombian athletes on Saturday had been in recent contact with a person who turned out to be positive for COVID-19 yesterday,” UAE-Team Emirates said. “Following the protocol of the Team and the UCI, the three riders were isolated, sent home, and will all undergo another test.”
The team emphasized that pre-race coronavirus tests for all three riders had returned negative results.
With the withdrawal of the UAE-Team Emirates trio, a total of five riders have been pulled from the Vuelta a Burgos over concerns after contact with individuals positive for coronavirus. Israel Start-Up Nation pulled Itamar Einhorn out of the race on Monday due to his recent contact with teammate Omer Goldstein, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, and on Tuesday that team also pulled Alex Dowsett out of the race due to Dowsett’s contact with Einhorn.
Decisions to pull riders from the event have been precautionary in nature; as of Wednesday, none of those riders had returned positive tests for COVID-19.
