Two riders kicked out of the Tour of Flanders after early scuffle

Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana-Premier Tech) and Otto Vergaerde (Alpecin-Fenix) were both disqualified from the Tour of Flanders after an incident that occurred less than half an hour into the race.

Fedorov was riding at the front of the pack with some 240 km still to go and tried unsuccessfully to get clear of the bunch before slowing in frustration, with Vergaerde just behind him. Vergaerde avoided running into Fedorov but then, moments later, he pulled up alongside the Astana-Premier Tech rider and shouldered him.

Fedorov stayed upright and then swerved in Vergaerde’s direction, although he did not make contact.

After about 30 minutes, race commissaires informed both Astana-Premier Tech and Alpecin-Fenix that each rider had been disqualified from the race.
