Two riders added to long list of doping suspensions from Vuelta a Costa Rica
Two Costa Rican cyclists have been provisionally suspended following positive tests from the 2019 edition of the lamentably notorious Vuelta a Costa Rica, according to a press release from the Costa Rican anti-doping authorities.
Fabricio Quirós, 29, and Orlando Quesada, 31, were suspended by Costa Rica’s anti-doping authority, CONAD-CR. Quesada won the penultimate stage of the race and finish seventh overall.
The two names tack on to the end of a long list of doping positives from the Costa Rican stage race, which is part of the UCI’s Americas Tour.
Last month, two additional cyclists were suspended following positive tests at the same Costa Rican race. Roberto Argüello was suspended for a blood transfusion, and Amil Munich, the son of the Costa Rican cycling association’s vice president, was suspended for returning a positive test for an anabolic agent.
In early 2018, 12 riders were suspended after the 2017 edition of the race after testing positive for EPO and EPO-related products. Suspended riders included the overall winner and multiple stage winners, and were the result of an intelligence-led operation by the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF).
