Geraint Thomas (Ineos) plans to keep racing on his bike after he retires from the pro road peloton—as part of a triad of activities that will also include swimming and running.

The 2018 Tour de France champ said in a recent interview at an event put on by triathlon retailer Nytro Multisport in Southern California that he seems himself transitioning to triathlon after he calls it a career on the road in a few years.

“I used to swim as a kid, and I did a few triathlons,” Thomas said. “When I retire from professional cycling, I definitely want do an Ironman, or maybe a few.”

Thomas has been training with pro road racer-turned-triathlete Cameron Wurf recently, which has apparently helped foster his interest in the discipline. Wurf has spoken highly of Thomas’s swimming and running abilities before.

For now, Thomas remains focused on his road goals, with his 2020 program very likely set to include a return to the Tour de France, where he finished second behind teammate Egan Bernal in 2019. Beyond that, as Thomas mentioned in the Nytro interview, he plans to continue racing on the road for the next few seasons, but will then be looking for a new sporting avenue.

“I think I’ll need something when I stop, because if I stop in three or four years … this is my 14th year now, so I could end up doing 18 years as a pro,” the 33-year-old Welshman said.

“Then before that I did two years as an amateur, and as a junior, cycling is your life then as well, so it’s 20-odd years where that’s all you do and that’s all you think about, and you’ve always got a goal within two or three months. To stop and not have anything would be tough, so why not an Ironman?”
