The 2023 Tour de France will start in Bilbao
The ASO announced on Friday that the 2023 Tour de France will roll out from Bilbao, Spain.
The 2023 Grand Départ will mark the first time that Bilbao, the biggest city in the Basque Country, has hosted the start of the Tour. The race last got underway in Spain in 1992, when San Sebastián, also in the Basque Country, hosted the Grand Départ.
As the Tour celebrates its 110th edition and 120th anniversary in 2023, Bilbao will join a list of nine other Spanish locales that have hosted a Tour stage start or finish over the years.
Organizers said that the 2023 race will start with “a loop stage,” and that stage 2 of the race “will also take place entirely within the borders of the Basque Country.”
Nice, France, will host the Grand Départ this year, while Copenhagen, Denmark, is set to host the start of the Tour in 2022, which will make the 2023 edition of the race the second in a row to get underway outside of France.
