Sunweb kicks Storer out of training camp for violating team bubble rules
Michael Storer was sent away from Sunweb’s training camp after breaking team bubble rules, Wielerflits reports.
Sunweb is currently holding camp in Kühtai, Austria, and the team is observing strict rules to maintain social distancing. Sunweb riders have been divided into three “bubbles” and are prohibited from having contact with those outside the bubble.
As the team explained in a press release detailing its plans to get back to training and racing, “The hotel is open exclusively for Team Sunweb, with different rider groups from all three programs checking in and out at different periods throughout.”
Sunweb has emphasized that “extensive precautions regarding health and safety are being taken, so that the team can put the finishing touches to their training, safely and in a top sports environment.”
Last week, Storer reportedly left the team hotel to go shopping, against team rules. Sunweb has since decided to expel 23-year-old Australian from camp.
The team explained that the decision was a safety measure.
“It is purely as a precaution and Michael himself fully understands it,” a team spokesperson told Wielerflits. “Elite sport in the time of coronavirus is a new situation for everyone. A lot is demanded of people and of course we also understand that riders and staff have to get used to this.”
