Specialized’s Angi crash sensor now works with Wahoo Elemnt computers

Wahoo and Specialized Angi

Wahoo Fitness has announced yet another firmware update to its range of Elemnt GPS computers which should make Specialized’s Angi helmet crash sensor just that little more convenient to use.

Let me rewind a bit. Angi is a small crash sensor that sits on the retention system of a number of Specialized helmets and can be installed on the majority of other helmets, too. Those who remember the original tech, the little yellow crash sensor called IceDot, will know exactly what this is. In short, the sensor is connected to your phone, and in the event of a crash, the sensor will automatically trigger an alarm that alerts your emergency contacts to your whereabouts unless you instruct the app otherwise.

Specialized previously acquired that tech and made it easier to use and less obstructive than the original. And now, Wahoo is looking to make it even easier and with an element of convenience.

Up until now, to use an Angi you’d need to wake the sensor, start your ride through Specialized’s own Ride app and then get to your phone in case you accidentally triggered the emergency crash protocol.

The new firmware update is currently for iOS users only but Wahoo says an Android version is near.

Wahoo’s latest firmware will allow the Wahoo to control the Angi sensor. As long as you have the Specialized Ride app running in the background of your phone, then each time you start a ride through your Wahoo Elemnt GPS, it’ll automatically start the Angi, too.

That’s obviously more convenient than the current approach, but the big news here is that you’ll be able to cancel an accidental emergency trigger straight from your GPS device.

Accidentally knocked your helmet? Now you can cancel the emergency alert straight from a Wahoo device.

The new feature requires that you install the latest (free) firmware on both your Wahoo and Angi devices. You’ll also still need to run the Wahoo Elemnt Companion app and Specialized Ride app in unison, even if you no longer need to specifically go into the latter.

Wahoo has been rather progressive with opening up its compatibility to products outside of its own lineup, especially those related to rider safety. A recent example of this is Wahoo updating its firmware to work with Garmin Varia bike radar devices.
