SD Worx to honour Amy Pieters with a special jersey in Paris

Team SD Worx will be switching out their usual beachy fade on stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift for a blue and black jersey in honour of their teammate Amy Pieters who is still recovering from a training accident in December of 2021. Pieters’ absence has been in the back of everyone’s minds throughout the 2022 season, and her team especially has missed the former Dutch national champion on and off the bike.

Pieters designed the special edition jersey herself for a collection she was working on in 2021.

“Before her accident, Amy was already busy designing her own cycling apparel collection,” said SD Worx team manager Danny Stam. “It is an honour for us as a team to present these clothes during the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes in Paris. We are very grateful to the international cycling union UCI, the various national federations and Tour organizer ASO for making this possible.”

The team will wear the special edition jersey while racing on the Champs-Élysées for the first stage of the inaugural Tour de France Femmes.

“In the summer of 2021 we started with the first design for Amy’s dream, her own cycling apparel collection,” said designer for Specialized Lisan in the team’s press release. “Amy’s vision was very strong from the beginning; to create a collection of high-quality cycling apparel that stands out by using a nice balance of colours with just one element that stands out.

“We chose colours that are not often found in women’s cycling apparel collection. Amy also looked at trendy elements in everyday clothing that could be used in her cycling apparel collection. This is how the very first design came about; the Ocean collection.”

Pieters, who was placed in a coma following the crash, only woke up in March. Since then she has been slowly making progress with her recovery but the former Dutch national champion is still partially paralyzed on her right side.

“She woke up at a very low level. There was very little reaction from her. Very slowly that has improved in recent months,” her father said in an interview with NOS.nl in June. “First she had to learn to breathe on her own, then she had to learn to eat and now she actually eats with us. The next step is that she learns to talk.

“She understands more and more when you ask something. Then she nods yes or no. You also notice more and more that she has her own will again and she occasionally says no. Do you want to eat? No. But despite everything, she is quite optimistic, quite cheerful to deal with.”

A crowdfunding campaign was launched at the Dutch national championships in June to help with the costs of Pieters’ recovery.
