Route finding: Shoddy’s favorite mapping apps
I’m guessing I’m not the only one who over the past few months found themselves daydreaming of wild, adventurous rides. I had the maps out on a few occasions, planning my great escape, or just firing up the imagination with places that I needed to tick off. And now that we’re allowed out I thought I’d share with you a few of my favourite route planning apps and websites.
I’ve not just stuck to road riding though, I’ve tried to include an app or site for the many forms that the bike comes in. From commuting to mountain biking.
In this day and age, it’s pretty hard to get lost, which is a shame really, because I’ve found some lovely places I’ve returned time and again via this method. Places I’d never have otherwise found. Then on the flip side, I’ve also found just as many places I’d never want to return to.
But with all the tech at our fingers and many of the apps and sites having a social aspect to them that I speak of in this video, we can now find amazing places easier.
Don’t get me wrong; there’s still a place for getting lost. But there’s also a place for knowing and planning the trip your taking in some detail. Whether its a safe and quick route to work, or a multi-day adventure that ventures into the far-flung corners of the world.
I hope there’s something for everyone in this video, and I hope it’s a video that sparks a discussion. I want to know your favourite means of routing a ride. What methods and apps do you use and swear by? Like anyone, once I’ve found something I’m comfortable with I’ll stick with it. I want to know if I’m wrong, if there are better alternatives to what I’ve thrown out there.
