Riders will contend for 'over $50,000 in cash and prizes' at Belgian Waffle Ride California

The Belgian Waffle Ride CA will offer “over $50,000 in cash and prizes” in 2022. According to organizers, that amount marks the largest ever purse for a one-day gravel race.

The first event of the Quadrupel Crown of Gravel, the BWR CA runs from April 29 to May 1 in Southern California, with prizes on offer for the long-distance race that takes place in San Diego on April 30.

The top five men’s and women’s finishers in that race will all earn prize money, as will the top three junior racers.

The series will continue with the BWR NC in Asheville in June, the BWR UT in Cedar City in September, and BWR KS in Lawrence in October. Organizers have said that the series will also have its own prize purse.

Each of the other three races in the series will also offer prize money for age categories beyond what has been on offer in the past, in addition to distributing the purse among the top three elite riders there. The top three juniors will earn prize money at the BWR NC, the top three 45+ riders will earn prize money at the BWR UT, and the top three co-ed two-rider teams will earn prize money at the BWR KS.

“Our announcement of the 2022 prize money structure means that our effort to host the very best professional gravel racers in the world to race on the trails and roads of San Diego has commenced,” said Michael Marckx, BWR creator and Race Director. “We are so excited about this year’s guaranteed prize purse, which includes a payout for the top junior riders, because it will allow us to better reward the elites while broadening the pool of recipients and shining a spotlight on the burgeoning talent we have here in the United States. The BWR events’ prize structure is open to all racers, not a hand-picked group of exclusive racers. This is for everybody! These open purses for the Waffle races mean that spectators and participants alike will be able to watch, and perhaps participate side by side with, remarkably talented, world class cyclists.”
