If you haven’t heard of the Gran Trittico Lombardo, we don’t blame you. Monday’s race was the first-ever edition of this Italian one-day event and it might very well be the last.
When coronavirus laid waste to the 2020 calendar and forced the rescheduling of much of the calendar, there wasn’t room for everything. Among the casualties were three Italian one-day races, normally held in September and October in the lead-up to Il Lombardia: Coppa Bernocchi, Coppa Agostoni and Tre Valli Varesine. Organisers merged features from all three races into one and called it the Gran Trittico Lombardo: the “Great Lombard Triptych” (Lombardy is the region of north west Italy where all three races are normally held.)
To describe the first Gran Trittico Lombardo as “wet” would be a gross understatement. As you can see from Kristof Ramon’s photos below, the riders were treated to nothing short of a torrential downpour — a far cry from the hot and dusty conditions experienced at Strade Bianche just a few days earlier.
