Paris-Roubaix has been cancelled
Paris-Roubaix has been cancelled. The 118th edition of the iconic race was due to have its first women’s version this season, and was scheduled for October 25. Due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in the region around Lille, close to the finish in Roubaix, the French regional and national authorities have requested the cancellation of the event.
Paris-Roubaix takes place in the most northern departments of France: Nord, Pas de Calais and Picardie. The COVID-19 situation, especially in the region of Lille, has worsened considerably in the past few weeks. The French health ministry had to change the region’s code from red to deep red, the maximum alert level in France.
In the past few days the news coming from France was not encouraging, yet many teams planned a recon of the Classic and shared pictures of muddy cobbled sectors with the world. There were plans to clear all the sectors of public and make the Roubaix velodrome a ‘zone interdit’ for spectators but despite the efforts of organizer ASO the regional and national authorities deemed the sanitary risks too high.
The 118th Paris-Roubaix for men and inaugural edition for women is now scheduled for Sunday April 12, 2021.
The remaining UCI WorldTour calendar for men includes the ongoing Giro d’Italia, Gent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders, the Vuelta a España and the AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne.
The UCI Women’s Worldtour is down to four races: Gent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders, AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne and the Ceratizit Madrid Challenge.
