Omens from the past: Tao Geoghegan Hart at the U23 Paris-Roubaix
When it comes to cycling documentaries, the 2015 French film “Rêves d’Enfer” takes on a special significance this year. Not only does it fill a small part of the gap left by the Paris-Roubaix that never happened this year, but importantly it highlights the story of then up-and-coming rider Tao Geoghegan Hart.
“Rêves d’Enfer” (or ‘Dreams of Hell’) comes from our French filmmaker friends Nicolas Loth, Laurent Galinon and Pierre Carrey and follows then-aspiring-pros Tao Geoghegan Hart, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Dylan Kowalski and Jérémy Defaye as they prepared for the 2015 edition of the under-23 Paris-Roubaix.
Aged between 19 and 22 years, they’re a fascinating lot: the heir to a great Belgian cycling family; a Northern French lad who knows every corner of the race route; a talented climber from the French Riviera who has no chance to shine on the flat and cobbled terrain, and of course an unpredictable but gifted Brit who [spoiler alert] would go on to win the 2020 Giro d’Italia.
Throughout the film, we follow these riders on their chaotic journey through the “Hell of the North” — a brutal test that reveals deep character and that, despite its difficulty, has irresistible appeal to so many riders.
