New Velocio Unity jersey to raise money to help mitigate climate change
Velocio launched its Unity series of limited-edition jerseys back in 2017 as a way to not only raise awareness for various societal issues, but also to raise money to actively help do something about them, with previous editions tackling mental illness, legal services for refugees and immigrants along the US southern border, and “unifying and celebrating togetherness” through more general charities such as the American Civil Liberties Union, The Human Rights Campaign, Amnesty International, and World Bicycle Relief.
“Taking design inspiration from the receding land masses affected by rising sea levels, the 2021 Unity jersey is a physical representation of our collective ticking clock, the losses we all face.”
Velocio will donate all of the profits from this jersey to one of three climate focused organizations that buyers will be able to choose themselves during the ordering process: the Environmental Justice Foundation, who “focuses on the climate crisis through the lens of human rights”; 350.org, who works to shift international energy usage from fossil fuels to more renewable sources; and Protect Our Winters, who focuses on protecting outdoor spaces and activities from climate change for future generations.
Velocio is offering the Unity SE short-sleeved summer-weight jersey for US$169 / AU$199 / £175 / €125, in both men’s and women’s cuts. Jerseys are being offered only for pre-order at the moment, with shipments slated to begin August 15.
As for the question of how buying yet another jersey to help fight climate change makes any sense when what people should arguably doing is buying less stuff in general… well, it seems Velocio has already thought of that.
“We’re actively encouraging people to just donate to the causes if they don’t need or want another jersey, and the links to do that are on that page, too,” replied Velocio co-founder Andrew Gardner.
That said, if you do have a use for another jersey, this one does look quite nice, and it doesn’t seem like Velocio’s Unity project is just a marketing ploy. According to Velocio, last year’s Unity jersey alone raised US$110,000, and Velocio’s total donations through the Unity project through the years has totaled nearly US$500,000.
