Hello again, CyclingTips readers.
Olympians can re-mark their calendars. The organizers of the Tokyo Games have announced the new dates for the postponed event, which will now be held in 2021.
The rescheduled Tokyo Olympics will run from July 23 to August 8 of next year, roughly one year from the initially planned dates. As currently stands, that creates some overlap between the last few stages of the 2021 Tour de France and the first few days of the Olympics, so we’ll see if the ASO shifts the calendar dates for the Tour as is usually the case in an Olympic year.
In any case, the athletes will be happy to have some clarity, while fans can look forward to a global sporting showcase, even if it means waiting an extra 12 months.
Until next time, readers.
What’s news
| Olympics rescheduled for July of 2021
Olympic organizers announced the new dates for the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. After being postponed amid coronavirus concerns, the Games have been moved to roughly one year after their initially scheduled dates, and will now run from July 23 to August 8 of 2021.
The 2021 Tour de France is currently planned to run until July 25, meaning that there will be some overlap in dates unless Tour organizers alter plans (as typically happens in an Olympic year).
| UAE-Team Emirates osteopath spent nine days in ICU with coronavirus
Dario Marini, an osteopath with the UAE-Team Emirates squad, was among the team members in the United Arab Emirates for the UAE Tour hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19. Despite being fit and in his 30s, he spent nine days in the intensive care unit at an Abu Dhabi hospital. Now recovering and awaiting the end of a quarantine period, he has told Italian newspaper ArezzoNotizie that people should take the virus seriously.
“Do not underestimate the coronavirus, I am 38 years old and I got seriously ill while enjoying excellent health and having an athletic physique,” he said. “For those in solitary confinement, in quarantine, or simply anxious I say not to falter and above all comply with all the provisions that have been given to us: Stay at home, use masks and gloves, respect the distances.”
| Aevolo becomes a U24 team
American development team Aevolo has decided to give riders that would be aging out of the squad an extra year due to the widespread race cancellations caused by coronavirus. What is typically an under-23 outfit will thus be an under-24 outfit at least for the next year.
“I hope this gives the 22-year-old riders some relief mentally,” said Aevolo sports director Michael Creed. “This pandemic isn’t their fault and I don’t want them tempted to come back too soon and put themselves in situations that could potentially get them sick.”
