New date announced for postponed Melbourne to Warrnambool
Organisers of the Melbourne to Warrnambool have moved swiftly to lock in a new date for the 2021 edition of the race.
The 267 km one-day event was due to be held last Saturday but was cancelled less than 24 hours beforehand when the Victorian government announced a five-day lockdown to combat a surge of coronavirus cases.
The 105th edition of the ‘Warrny’ will now run on May 1, putting it closer to other similar races within the National Road Series’ ‘Classics season’, namely the Grafton to Inverell (May 8) and the Tour de Brisbane (April 11).
“What had planned to be a great Warrny last weekend, will now be a great Warrny on the 1st of May,” said Shane Wilson, chair of the Warrnambool Citizen’s Road Race Committee. “The cycling community and our partners have provided us with great support to reschedule so quickly. Our team is raring to go.”
Entries for last Saturday’s race will be carried over to the new date. Riders looking for a refund can contact AusCycling.
